What is the Keto Diet or Low-Carb Diet?
A Keto, or Ketogenic diet is a diet that emphasizes protein, vegetables, and healthy fats and restricts (or drastically reduces) carbohydrates. The principle behind this diet is that when you restrict carbohydrates (which happen to be the bodies primary source of energy), your body resorts to using fat for energy.
During this process, ketone bodies are released into the blood stream. The idea is to force your body into using ketones for energy rather than glucose (or the sugar resulting from metabolizing carbohydrates).
What do you eat on a keto or low carb diet?
- Beans and legumes
- Vegetables (especially low carb vegetables)
- Unsaturated fats (avocado, nuts, olive oil, etc.)
Pros and Cons of the Keto Diet:
During the Keto diet, the body is forced into a state of ketosis. This happens as the body uses fat (rather than carbohydrates) as the primary source of energy. The process of using fat for energy can produce weight loss. However, like most restrictive diets, weight loss happens in the short term but is difficult to sustain in the long term.
In addition, because this diet focuses on protein and fat, it’s easy to consume to much saturated fat and cholesterol. We can find saturated fat in meat (especially red meat) cheese, and other animal products. A diet high in saturated fat and cholesterol is directly linked to heart disease and diabetes.
