A plate with two chicken gyros in pitas, with tzatziki, onion, cucumber and tomato.

If you’re looking to “mix things up” and make something delicious that people of all ages will enjoy, these chicken gyros are IT! I know your family will LOVE them!

How to make Chicken Gyros:

  • Make the tzatziki yogurt sauce by combining all ingredients. Taste it and add more seasoning (lemon juice, garlic, salt, pepper or cumin) to your liking. Set aside or refrigerate until later (can be made ahead).

  • Combine all marinade ingredients together and pour over chicken. Marinate for at least 1-4 hours.
  • Heat grill to medium. Remove chicken from marinade, letting any excess sauce drip off.
  • Grill chicken for a few minutes on each side, flipping once, until cooked through. Remove to a plate to rest before chopping into bite-size pieces.

Make Ahead and Freezing Instructions:

To Make ahead: The marinade for the chicken and tzatziki sauce can be made 2-3 days in advance. For quick prep, chop the veggies hours before serving.

To Freeze: The raw chicken can be frozen in the marinade for up to 3 months (preferred method). Thaw overnight in the fridge, then cook chicken according to instructions. The cooked chicken can also be frozen for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge, then rewarm.

Notes

*I like to use chicken breast filets, or if you're chicken breasts are really thick you can slice the breast in half, lengthwise (called "butterfly") to make two thinner pieces.

I was most pleasantly surprised how quick and easy this was! I marinated & prepped before work, hub got home before me and grilled the chicken, and in 15 minutes from the time I got home and put everything together, we were eating dinner!

My whole family loves this recipe! Even my kids! I use it all the time when we are feeling Gyros. To save on time, I just buy my own Tzatziki sauce from the store but, the marinade for the gyros is fantastic!

    1. Hi! I just had a quick question. If I am not able to grill the chicken, is there another way I can cook it? I’m a college student and where I live I don’t have access to a grill, haha. Thank you in advance!

We had these for dinner last night and they were delicious. Our granddaughter was over hanging out with us for the day, and she loved them and asked me to give her mom the recipe. Thank you for sharing

I added Greek yogurt to the marinade, and it was great!! The tzatziki was a bit thick, but once I added some cashew milk to thin it out, it was great! Thanks!!

  5. So, I diced my chicken up and have it marinading overnight. Is there a way to cook in an air fryer instead of the grill (obviously will affect calories but that’s okay)?

This was super easy to make and even my picky 2 year old loved the chicken! This has now become one of our regular meals!

  7. Soooo yummy. We’ll be adding to our weekly meal list. I cooked the chicken in a skillet on the stove instead of the grill, but it still turned out juicy and delicious!

We LOVED these!!! So delicious!! Thank you so much for another incredible dinner my husband is already asking for again this week! 🙂

    1. I missed the small piece of cucumber and saw small cucumber so I did half a larger cucumber ugh. It’s a bit cucumbery

My daughter says this is her that if she ever commits a terrible crime and gets sentenced to death – 🤣she wants this to be her last meal! LOL 😂- she had me make 6 freezer meal packets of this before her husband returned from deployment and when I asked her how he liked it, she said she’s not letting him have and! 😂 it was DELICIOUS!

So excited to try this!! Question though… do you mind sharing which pita bread did you use specifically?

We loved these! Easy to make, delicious, light and bright summer dinner! We added feta cheese to ours, I highly recommend that! We loved them so much we made another round after we ate up all the leftovers! Thank you!

  11. Crowd pleaser except I toasted my spices a bit before adding to marinade and sautéed chicken breast strips then chopped for easier eating. Also found that if you roast the pita pockets a bit, they get a nice smoky flavor that enhances the chicken and tatziki sauce. Yummo.

  12. I wish the total time for making this meal would have included the marinade time. So I thought, great this meal will only take 30 minutes total to make!
Then I saw the instructions on the marinade and sauces and that was frustrating.
Hoping this will all be just as good somehow without taking the 1-4 hours in the fridge for the marinade…

  13. Hi! These look amazing, I can’t wait to try!! Just a quick question, is the 402 Kcal just for one or for the six servings?

  14. This recipe sounds so good! I’m interested in trying it because I don’t like regular cucumbers but I do like English cucumbers. I’m not sure what “1 small piece of English cucumber” means though. Would you be able to clarify?

Amazing gyros! My boyfriend wanted something different for dinner and I stumbled across this recipe on Pinterest, so I bought all of the ingredients and followed the recipe to a tee. We both give it 10/10! Thank you so much, this is going into my recipe book ☺️

  16. Wow these gyros were delicious! We are having the leftovers again tonight. First time on your site, love it! Followed the recipe exactly We only added some crumbled feta cheese!

  17. Hello Lauren,

I’ve tried various recipes and spice combinations for the marinade, though yours is one we like the best. We don’t have to change a thing about it.

I’ve been known to double the recipe, and use an entire tray of chicken breasts, cut into bite-sized pieces. They are perfectly seasoned, and perfect for burritos, nachos, gyros, and so much more. I’ve even added cooked bites to soup!

    Thank you!

Thank you, Lauren! I made these and your spring rolls this week for my family and we really enjoyed them. My daughter told me, “Your dinners this week nailed it!” It doesn’t get any better than that.
