A homemade Teriyaki Sauce recipe in a bowl with a spoon scooping some up.

Take 10-minutes to make the best homemade Teriyaki Sauce.

This teriyaki sauce is an absolute staple in my fridge. I use it to marinate salmon and Teriyaki Chicken, or our favorite Hawaiian Bowls, or Teriyaki Pasta salad. Anything you'd use store-bought teriyaki sauce for, this homemade teriyaki sauce is better! Store-bought sauces have dozens of weird ingredients and preservatives you can't even pronounce, and this homemade version has real, simple ingredients you always have on hand. Plus we know by now that homemade tastes better and is less expensive, too. 🙂

If you wanna really up your homemade sauce game, try our BBQ Sauce, Ketchup, Salsa, Ranch Dressing or Enchilada Sauce!

Instructions

  • Add all ingredients to a saucepan over medium heat.
½ cup low-sodium soy sauce, 2 Tablespoons rice vinegar, 1 Tablespoon sesame oil, ¼ cup + 1 Tablespoon light brown sugar, 1 Tablespoon honey, ¾ teaspoon ground ginger, 1 clove garlic, 2 teaspoons cornstarch+ 2 tsp water, ¼ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • Bring to a boil, stirring constantly, and boil for about 1 minute. The sauce should be thick enough to coat the back of the spoon. Remove from heat.
  • Store teriyaki sauce in the fridge for 1-2 weeks.
  • Ideas for using Teriyaki Sauce:
    Teriyaki Chicken
    Teriyaki Salmon Bowl
    Hawaiian Bowls
Burgers: Smothered over a Hamburger, Grilled Chicken Sandwich, or Turkey Burger, with add a ring of pineapple and and extra teriyaki sauce.

Notes

Teriyaki Sauce Marinade: I love to use this as a marinade! Just pour ¼ cup over raw chicken, steak or fish and let it marinate for 30 minutes or more.
Healthy Teriyaki Sauce: Decrease the sugar, to taste.
No Cornstarch: Use flour for a 1:1 ratio substitute.
Gluten-free: Make sure to use gluten-free soy sauce or tamari.
Vegan: Omit or swap for agave.
Freezing Instructions: Freeze in a freezer safe container for up to 3 months. Thaw completely in the refrigerator before using.

This recipe is amazing. I made this sauce for teriyaki chicken last night and there were no leftovers. I accidentally added a little more soy than the recipe by mistake, but it still tasted great. I love teriyaki and cannot wait to make it again. It is quick, easy, and delicious! Thank you!

I couldn’t locate my go to teriyaki recipe so went on the hunt for a new one. I gave this a try, it was awesome! It was quick to make and I had all ingredients on hand for it. Delicious! Thanks so much for sharing:)

Very nice! Not cloyingly sweet & came together quickly. Used maple syrup & garlic powder in place of honey & fresh garlic – no honey on hand & short on time. Marinating salmon steaks in it.

Good recipe. But have you considered making it more precise? For example, rice vinegar comes in several varieties, from pure to lightly seasoned to highly seasoned. I’m sure you’ve also noticed that garlic cloves come in a variety of sizes. And have you considered providing weights (more precise) as well as volume?

Actually Clarence, if you look at the post, you can see the kind of rice vinegar used as well as the size of the garlic clove.

I’m sorry, but this sauce almost makes for a slight note of coffee in its flavor I don’t find very pleasant. If you’re looking for the classic flavor Panda Express or other American/Asian restaurants have for teriyaki, this one isn’t that flavor profile.

Wow! This sauce if amazing! It was so easy to make and absolutely delicious. My family and I thought it was way better than the store bought teriyaki we’ve been using. I will definitely be making it again. Thanks so much for creating and sharing this recipe!

I was in the search for a good homemade Teriyaki sauce and had tried several but something was always not quite right. Until this recipe. My husband asked what brand it was so we could get it again. Once he found out it was homemade, he asked if we could double or triple the recipe next time! This is now the only Teriyaki sauce recipe we use.

I made this with a few tweaks. I sautéed the garlic and fresh ginger first then added the rest along with toasted sesame seeds.
Made teriyaki chicken rice bowls and it came out great!
Thanks for this.

Absolutely delicious! This recipe has my husband’s do it again approval! I used cayenne pepper because I didn’t have red pepper flakes.
