These Jumbo Chocolate Chip Cookies are made from scratch, extra thick and chewy chocolate chip cookies. They have a slight crisp on the outside and are soft in the center, with plenty of chocolate morsels throughout.
My kids love baking cookies together on the weekends, especially helping to measure and pour the ingredients and sneak bites of cookie dough. Some of our favorite cookie recipes include Super Soft Sugar Cookies where they can cut shapes out of the dough and Homemade Oreo Cookies.
Jumbo Chocolate Chip Cookies
This fun and easy chocolate chip cookie recipe is my new favorite way to make them and they’re better than anything you’d find in a bakery! Next time I make them I may even dip half the cookie in chocolate for an extra measure of WOW!
How to make jumbo chocolate chip cookies:
- Mix the dry ingredients (flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt)
- Cream the butter, sugar, and brown sugar
- Add the eggs and vanilla and mix until combined.
- Gradually mix in the flour and mix until combined.
- Stir in chocolate chips.
- Use a ¼ cup measuring cup to scoop spoonfuls of dough onto prepared cooke sheet, about 2 inches apart.
- Bake for 12 to 15 minutes or just until light golden brown around the edges. Do not over bake.
- Let stand 1 minute on cookie sheet, then transfer to cooling rack to cool completely.
How to make sure your cookies aren’t flat:
Cookies often become thin when they spread too far during cooking. To ensure your cookies stay thick and not thin and flat, make sure to measure carefully, and be sure the butter isn’t warm, but just room temperature.
You also may chill the dough for 30 minutes before dividing it into balls on the cookie sheet, which can help can prevent spreading, but isn’t required in this recipe.
Another important note is that you don’t want to place cookie balls on a hot baking sheet.
What is the best flour for cookies:
All-purpose flour is my preferred flour when baking cookies (and most baked goods)! This recipe was developed with all-purpose flour and adjustments have been made to ensure thick and chewy cookies with this type of flour.
The primary difference between cake flour and all-purpose flour is in the protein content. Cake flour is a low protein flour that has a very fine texture because it has been finely milled. If you’ve ever had angel food cake, this is a great example of how cake flour can make certain baked goods really light and fluffy.
If you are using self-rising flour, remember that salt and baking powder have been added so you will want to eliminate both from the recipe.

Thanks for the cookie recipe, I’m trying them this morning, my son in law loves soft chocolate chip cookies and mine sometimes are but most times are not, I will let you know how they get!😀
Delicious! And if it helps weighers like myself, I did 68 grams each (I weighed the first 1/4 I measured.) Also, 12 minutes was perfect for me.
Love this recipe!! I have made it several times now and the cookies are moist, chewy and plump! Definitely a Jumbo Cookie!
I just made this recipie. The dough seems crumbly. But if pressed together it hols. Is the dough subpose to be crumbly? If not what do I need to add ?
Thanks for making our jumbo chocolate chip cookies! The dough is not supposed to be crumbly, it should be soft and pliable. If the dough is crumbly, it’s possible that the flour measurement was slightly off. You can try adding a tablespoon of milk to the dough and mix it in until the dough comes together. Let us know if that helps!
I left a note so positive review earlier. I was soooo wrong! After the cookies were completely cooled both my husband and I tried another one. We both looked at each other and said “yummmm”. I don’t know why but once cooled they just were bursting with delicious flavor. Nice and chewy inside with a delicate crunch around the edges. Disregard the first review with my apologies. These are fantastic! The added finishing salt on top took these to another level. Give that a try.
I love to cook and bake as well .Nothing like homemade. I see all these wonderful recipes and I can’t wait to get back to it. Have been recuperating for 3 months but I’ll be trying all these recipes. Thank You for sharing.
Tried these several times and they turned out good. They are delicious.
While the cookies are thick, even fresh out of the oven, the outer layer was very dry. After left to cool and settle, the entire cookie was very dry aswell. While not the worst cookies ever, I would not come back for this recipe again unfortunately. Definitely needs to be eaten dipped in milk, not soft/moist.
Can these be made into chipper bars instead of cookies
fyi…my cookies were very good although flat, & they were not ‘crackly’ on top like yours, they were smooth. i followed recipe to a ‘T’..why such a difference if you know/ i really want them to look like yours…& they were refrigerated for hours.
just made them..they did spread though & it seems all my cookies spread when they are not intended to…i wonder why though?
Can I use unsalted butter ?
Can i refrogerate these cookies over night to stop it from spreading at all?
Yes, you can refrigerate them overnight.
If I wanted to pre make these then freeze the dough to cook at a later date. How would I go about the thaw process? Would it be better to put them in the fridge the night before baking?
You can roll the dough into balls and then freeze them, and bake them from frozen. Or you can freeze the dough, refrigerate it to thaw, and then roll and bake.
I made this while I was babysitting the other day. Amazing! I halved the recipe and there was still a lot of cookies. When I mixed the dough it seemed really dry, but it worked out fine. The only things I did different was smush the cookie balls once they were on the pan, and I used marshmallow flavoring because I couldn’t find vanilla (I wasn’t at my house). AMAZING!
mine were far from dry..
I have made these cookies many time. DELISH! I RECENTLY MOVEDED TO A MORE HUMID STATE AND NOW THESE COOKIES SPREAD OUT FLAT WHEN I BAKE THEM. LAUREN HOW DO I CORRECT THR SOREAD FLAT COOKIE? THE TASTE IS STILL AMAZING.
Here’s a resource that should help: https://www.bakingkneads.com/baking-in-high-humidity/
Is it 1 11/2 cups of butter or 1 1/2 sticks??? I can’t figure out why they are coming out so thin..
1 stick(8 Tbsp) is 1/2 cup. You need 3 sticks of butter.
yum
love love love these & the jumbo choc chip cookies too..only issue is how do i get the dough out of the measuring cup?
Thanks for the love!! We use a small spatula or spoon to scoop it out.
These were awful.. flat cookies. I used parchment paper, convection setting on my oven, refrigerated the dough, and froze the dough for an hour too. Flat as pancakes.
Hi Kenna,
I wouldn’t recommend convection for these cookies. Also, the instructions say to refrigerate for 30 minutes, not freeze for an hour. If you freeze that long and immediately try to bake them, they will be frozen for the first part of baking and will not turn out well.
Awesome recipe. Thankyou for sharing. It turned out great. The cookies were a nice size. My children were happy. I cooked 12, and froze the rest of the dough. I will be making these again in the near future.
Mine are also the same and didn’t use a convection oven. I tried to refrigerate them after the first batch came put flat and then they still came out flat!
Ok here’s my experience on brown sugar you can’t use dark brown sugar it has more molasses in it it will cause flat cookies use light brown sugar
So you didn’t follow the instructions and come on here to give a bad rating? Because you can’t follow instructions?! Girl, bye. 😂
Your recipes and meal plans are great, thank you! Would it be possible to add metric measurements in brackets to your recipes so those outside the USA could access the recipes more easily? The cup measurements are tricky for us in Europe and the rest of the world.
I wish I had the man power to go back and do this to all of my recipes. I do exactly what you described on my youtube channel, but for now, you can click the “metrics” tab in the recipe card to change it to metrics! Hope that helps!
This is the best chocolate chip cookie recipe ever! The texture and taste is so good! Just curious if the nutrition information is for a
Specific serving size? ( I’m afraid to know bc I just ate 5😳😬)
Delicious!
When I make this recipe, my teenage kids called them “Jesus cookies” because they taste like Jesus made them. lol. So every now and then, I get asked if I’m making Jesus cookies.
Thank you for sharing this perfect recipe with us!
Took them to a party , and they got rave reviews. My sister said it was the best cookie she ever ate!!!!!!!! Thank you I will be making them a lot.
These look so good…absolutely amazing. I normally use 1 12 stick of butter and 1/2 stick of Crisco but I have to try this one with all butter.
My favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe! Last time instead of just chocolate chips I used chocolate chips, chocolate chunks, white chocolate chips, pretzels, sprinkles for fun, mini Reese’s cups, mini Oreos and a few pecans. I think that makes them everything but the kitchen sink cookies? They were AMAZING! Perfect recipe for all these additions.
Hi Lauren,
Thank you soo much for the cookies recipe. I tried 2 times but I don’t know what went wrong. My cookies turned flat.
your advice, please.
Mary.
Made these for Memorial Day with red white and blue M&M’s and everyone loved it! Glad I chose the right recipe 🙂 THANK YOU!!
This is by far my absolute favorite cookie recipe! It is the perfect mix between crunch and chew! I love how thick they are! Today is my fourth time making them and we are turning them into ice cream cookie sandwiches!!
I have been trying different Jumbo Chocolate Cookie recipes and this is by far my favorite recipe! I followed the recipe to the letter with the exception of instead of using 2 cups of Semi sweet chocolate chips, I used a combination of 1 cup Milk chocolate chips and 1/2 c. Semi chocolate chip chunks and a half cup of mini Semi chocolate chips. This recipe is definitely a keeper!
Amazing!! I’m not the best with baking cookies, but these turned out AMAZING. Everyone loved them! They were the perfect size and tasted amazing. My go-to recipe now for chocolate chip cookies!
Yummy
After yearssss of searching and trying finally I have found the exact perfection of thickness, chewiness and chocolateness, THANKYOU LAUREN
Just be careful to follow instructions exactly!
Me encantó! Felicitaciones por esta receta tan divina! 😍😍
Fantastic recipe, love these cookies!
Hi, do you use salted or unsalted butter? I can’t wait to try these!
I used unsalted. You can use salted and decrease the amount of added salt.
I made these today. They came out perfectly. My family loved them
Best cookies ever
Cookies were a big hit! Mine spread a bit more because the measuring cup I used to scoop them onto the cookie sheet wasn’t as deep. Still a BIG hit!!!
Hello Love the look and texture of your cookies, I must make them I need the recipe in grams. do you have the recipe in grams? please Many thanks
Hello,
I tried this recipe ad it’s phenomenal. Now what would you do if you want to make these smaller size to fit in boxes? Would you cut each dough portion in half and have double the cookies? Would they bake the same time or less? What do you suggest? I want them to be thick and perfect but just smaller in diameter.
Yes, just make smaller cooked and cook them a little less.
My daughter wants homemade large chocolate chip cookies for her wedding instead of cake. After reading your blog I decided to give it a try. I followed your recipe exactly and used my 1/4 cup ice cream scoop. I pressed them down a little into a fat disk and cooked 13 min. They came out picture perfect and are strong enough to be put in a small bag for guests. We were impressed with the taste. I froze two cookie discs of dough to bake later, I am confident they will be great. Thanks so much for the blog and directions. You rock!
LOVE This recipe! Will definitely be bookmarking it!
These cookies are so delicious! It’s now my go-to chocolate chip cookie recipe. Thank you!
I made this recipe and not it is a hit at my house! I made over 12 dozens in the last two weeks. I did use 1/2 up of sugar and the rest in a mixture of light and dark brown sugar
Do you have a double chocolate chip version of these? I love the thickness and the texture. Or would I just replace one cup of flour with cocoa powder?
I haven’t developed a recipe yet, but it’s on my list!
i love the cookies thx
How big are these in inches and how much does one cookie weigh?
They were approx.4″ I’m sorry I did not weigh them, so I really don’t know.
I have to say, every single recipe of yours that I make it just the best! These cookies are so delicious and easy to make. Thank you for sharing your talent with us!
I made these cookies and they are wonderful. I love a moist cookie and these fit the bill. I added chopped apricots and cranberries to get some fruit into my snack. One is perfect for my afternoon snack without filling up before dinner.
Wow! They were the best cookies ever.???
Great recipe. I’m so glad I found it. Thank you very much.
Thanks, Laura!
These cookies are wonderful! I made them for my team and everyone raved about how good they were! A perfect amount of soft and chewy in the middle and a crisp outside makes these so yummy. I highly recommended!
I’m so glad everyone liked them!
Wow, just finished baking a batch of these Jumbo Chocolate Chip Cookies and this may be the best chocolate cookie recipe I have ever used! Thanks for sharing Lauren. I live in a higher altitude and am always concerned that something will to wrong whenever I bake, even though cookies are usually not an issue, you never know and oftentimes have to play around with baked good recipes to get the right touch. Followed your recipe to a T and all was fantastic. Love that these are oversized, crispy on the outside and chewy in the middle. Yum!
I’m so glad you loved them! Thanks for commenting 🙂
These came out great! If it weren’t for the fact that my husband and I are really trying to minimize our sweets, they would be long gone. Made them 3 days ago. Hope they last 3 more days…
Just made these cookies and they are amazing. I have a recipe I always use that people love and I just tried these out on my boyfriend (the chocolate chip cookie connoisseur) and he said these are the best yet! Even better than my family recipe. I’ll keep this recipe around for sure! Cakey and chewy and just a slight crisp on the outside, they’re great.
I’m thrilled they passed the test! Thanks so much for sharing 🙂
