This old-fashioned Apple Cobbler is one of my FAVORITE fall desserts. It’s made with fresh apples in a cinnamon sauce, with a delicious cake-like topping.
We can’t get enough of cobbler recipes at our house. We enjoy peach cobbler and blueberry cobbler all year round, but when apple season comes, it’s either homemade apple crisp, apple cobbler, or fresh apple cake; on repeat!
Apple Cobbler
Many apple cobbler recipes are made with a biscuit like topping, I wanted the same old-fashioned cake-like topping that I use in my other recipes! It has a slight crisp on the top and is soft in the center, and pairs so well with the sauce and tender apples in this recipe.
How’s Apple Cobbler different from Apple Crisp?
There is a difference between apple crisp and apple cobbler. Just like its name, apple crisp has a crispy crumble topping made with oats. The topping for this apple cobbler is a smooth batter that is poured on top of the apple filling and bakes more cake-like.
Which apples are best for baking?
Any baking apple will work great! I tend to prefer Granny Smith apples but I also like Gala apples, Honeycrisp, Golden Delicious, or any other tart apple.
To peel or not to peel?
Yes, I like to peel the apples for apple cobbler! The skin doesn’t break down during baking and can make for a tougher texture. (But you can leave the skin on if you want, and chop the apples into smaller cubes!) I use my Johnny Apple Peeler for this part because it does the work for me. It PEELS, CORES and SLICES the apple all at once!
4 steps to easy Apple Cobbler:
Make the Apple Filling: Stir together water, brown sugar, cornstarch, lemon juice, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt in a large saucepan. Stir in apples. Cook over medium heat for 3-5 minutes.
Make the batter: In a large bowl mix together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Stir in the milk and melted butter, just until combined.
Pour into dish. Add apple mixture to your pan and pour the batter evenly on top. Sprinkle it lightly with cinnamon and it’s ready to bake!
Bake: at 350 degrees for about 38-40 minutes. Serve warm, with a scoop of ice cream, if desired.
Make Ahead and Freezer Instructions:
You could prepare the apple filling and store it in the fridge for up to 3 days, or freeze it for up to 3 months.
You can also freeze the baked cobbler for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator and warm in the oven before serving.

- 6 medium apples (Granny Smith, Golden Delicious, or other good baking apple), peeled and cut into chunks ¼ inch thick
- 1 cup water or apple juice
- 1/3 cup brown sugar , packed
- 1 Tablespoon cornstarch
- 1 Tablespoon lemon juice
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/8 teaspoon salt
For the batter:
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 cup milk
- 5 Tablespoons butter , melted
- ground cinnamon for topping
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F and grease a 9×13 inch pan lightly with cooking spray.
- Stir together brown sugar, water, cornstarch, lemon juice, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt together in a saucepan. Stir in apples. Cook over medium heat for 3-5 minutes, stirring.
- Pour mixture into prepared pan.
- In a large bowl mix together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Stir in the milk and melted butter, just until combined.
- Pour the mixture over the apples in the pan. Sprinkle lightly with cinnamon.
- Bake for about 38-40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the topping comes out clean.
- Allow to cool for at least 15 minutes before serving. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream, if desired.
- Cover and store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

I made this as written and it came out PERFECT!!! What a nice take on cobbler using apples. The only change i made was i added 2 tablespoons butter to apple mixture ( only because flour and cornstarch need a fat to thicken properly) lesson learned from making apple pies equal fat to starch by measures ie 1 tbsp to 1 tbsp starch to fat. It thickened up perfectly. What a wonderful dessert. I ate 2 bowls while still warm.
Reading through the comments seams most people who had issues or problems cant follow a recipe and have to make changes in measurements of ingredients then when it fails blame the recipe that THEY DIDN’T FOLLOW.
I WILL be making this my go to cobbler recipe for all fruit cobblers I make in future. I give it a well deserved 5* rating and am bookmarking this website to try other recipes and know they will be just as good as this one.
Folks before you give a bad review because you altered the recipe try making it as written then if it fails…. Get out of the kitchen you cant cook… Just kidding… Have a great day all.

This recipe was outstanding! Made this for one of our Thanksgiving desserts. Used about 8 or 9 small to medium sized granny Smith apples. Doubled the topping ingredients. Baked for over an hour until a knife came out clean. It was soooo good warm with a scoop of ice cream! Yummmmmm!
Found it to be a very satisfactory recipe. It was good and I intend to use it as a starting base for a variation that I will like even more. It was a very well received by the Thanksgiving diners as an alternative to the apple pie that I didn’t feel like making.
At first, I thought it would turn out liquidy, but it ended up perfect. The perfect balance of sweetness and tartness. definitely making it again.
Some suggested tweaks:
* 6 apples ended up being way too much and I had to go with 5. So reader be advised to have a backup plan for an extra apple or two (I have little kids so they got a snack).
* Apples and ginger are best friends. I urge you to consider adding 1 tsp or so of ginger powder to the filling portion. An unfortunate omission from the recipe, in my opinion.
* I did panic and felt I had to double the amount of batter I used for the topping. It’s difficult to get it to cover as suggested by the recipe.
* I tend to prefer savory and the topping was just about at my limit for sweetness. If you have a sweet tooth, follow the recipe. However, next time I make this I’ll be halving the sugar to see where that takes it.

Unimpressed. Thin fruit layer and very thin topping. Filling and topping a bit too sweet for my taste. In addition to number of apples, it would be nice to know how many cups are needed since apple size varies and is subjective. And how shall the apples be cut? The recipe says chunks but the picture appears to be slices. Sorry, but I guess with the rating this recipe had I really expected excellence.
Way too sweet. So sweet I couldn’t eat it. Next time I will only use a tablespoon of sugar over the apples and 1/2 cup in the topping. I also thought the apple to topping ratio was off. Probably would have been better with only 4 apples.
So delicious, just made for a family dinner and everyone went back for seconds. I didn’t have cornstarch on hand so left it out – didn’t seem like anything was missing!
Don’t waste your time on this recipe way too sweet and turns out so runny you can’t even save it by cooking it longer.
I used stamen apples; delicious! The dessert was a big hit in my house. My only changes are to increase the amount of topping just a bit and slightly less sugar because I like it a little less sweet.

Too much water, apples came out too liquidy. Had to discard the liquid after cooking the apples.
Also, I cut the sugar to 150 g instead of 220 and the cobbler still was too sweet.

Yum!! This recipe is so good and very easy to make. I think next time I make it I’ll do brown sugar in the batter just to see the difference flavor-wise, but if you follow this recipe exactly you will not be disappointed! The negative reviews I think are user error, this was simple and perfect.
Very tasty result. I let my sauce come together on low heat til apples were prepared, and then increased heat to cook apples til they sort of wilted.. the sauce will thicken at this point. The only negative was wishing there was more topping, so will increase next time. Yes, the batter does seem thin until the melted butter begins to cool and then it will thicken nicely.. I had to spread it carefully over the apples. Also, sprinkle “cinnamon sugar” on top to give it a nice glaze and not just brown specks. Enjoy..yummm
Best cobbler recipe I have found, and I’ve tried plenty over the years. This is both easy and tasty! I reduced water to 3/4 c. Baked until the top was evenly browned. Really delicious, next time I might reduce the sugar in the batter by 1/4 c. Thanks for the great recipe!
About how many cups is 6 medium apples? I prefer a measurement in case I have small or very large apples.
Great question! On average, a medium apple yields about 1 to 1.25 cups when peeled and chopped. So, for 6 medium apples, you’re looking at approximately 6 to 7.5 cups. However, it’s always a good idea to have a little extra on hand, just in case.
Maybe the recipe is missing something but the topping was runnier than pancake batter. Only the top of it crisped up. The rest just thickened the liquid inside. I’ve made many cobblers but this one did not seem like a cobbler at all. I wouldn’t even call it a crisp. But the flavor is great.
Great recipe with no changes needed. I perhaps cooked the apples an extra minute or two; I just kept an eye on them until they started to soften. I had fresh blackberries to use up so added them on top of the apple layer. I like a little extra crunch on top so I sprinkled on coarse sugar as well as cinnamon. Yummy for breakfast the next day too!

Have never made apple cobbler (only peach and blueberry) but my GOD this recipe is fantastic! I had some raisins laying around so I added some of those. I ate nearly the whole thing on my own and I made it again the next night!

Oof. Acceptable recipe, but could be a lot better. Apples mixture too watery. Topping too sweet, too heavy, gets over done. Here are my recommended changes.
Apple mixture:
1/2 cup water, no apple juice
Topping:
2 tablespoons butter, instead of 5
1/2 cup sugar, instead of 1
Add 1 egg white
Check finish at 30 min, maybe earlier.
I absolutely love this recipe!!! It’s the only one I will use for cobbler! The only thing I do differently is I pour a little of the batter in the bottom of the pan first before pouring in the apple mixture. Then I pour the rest of the batter on top. My family loves this recipe year round!! Thank you so much for posting and sharing! It’s at real hit in my household!

Excellent recipe, I doubled it and put it in a larger dish, I ran out of cinnamon but had some cinnamon and sugar that was mixed to sprinkled on top. It turned out great. Will make this one again.

I’ve made this lots of times now and the only problem is that it only lasts my wife and me two days and then it is gone! We use large Honey-Crisp apples, eight of them, and it is so good! I cook the apple pieces for ten minutes so they are soft for our senior teeth.The hardest part is peeling and coring and cutting up the apples. A potato peeler speeds up the peeling, and preparing the apples in assembly line fashion (slice the ends off all 8, peel all 8, core all 8, cut up all 8) speeds up the job for me.
I’ve made this a couple times now and it comes out great every time, plus it’s so easy and quick to put together.
Ignore all comments complaining about the batter/liquid consistency, as it seems these people didn’t even attempt to make this per the recipe. Watch the video, read the description. Yes, the batter is supposed to look like pancake batter and yes the apple liquid will still be a bit runny, but due to the added starch it’s going to thicken as it cooks.
Having said all this, when I make it I do let the apples cook a bit more on the stove because I like the apples to be softer so it’s easier for my kids to eat. The liquid always gets thicker, and the same thing will happen in your oven if you only cook your apples on the stove for the specified amount of time.
Couple other things: I’ve found this works with any apples I’ve had on hand: gala, Fuji, but granny Smith are my favorite. I also use 7 apples because I felt it could use a higher apple:batter ratio. I usually never have vanilla or nutmeg on hand and it’s still delicious without these. Finally, the video shows all the apples sliced and instantly added at once to the pot of cooking liquid. Since this is physically impossible I’ll first prep the liquid with the heat off, process and add the apples one by one, stirring each to coat to prevent oxidation/browning. Once all apples are added to the liquid then I turn the heat on.
This was like a light pancake poured on top of the apples. It was way too runny and not what a cobbler should be. I don’t understand the high ratings.
Just made this for the first time and it turned out magnificently! I used Golden Delicious apples in mine and added half a teaspoon of Captain Morgan’s spiced rum to the liquid mixture. The apples and the cobbler on top were just scrumptious! Definitely gonna be using this recipe in the future – thank you!
No eggs in a cobbler topping ? I’ve got the batter mixed up which I doubled the ingredients because it looked like it couldn’t possibly be enough for a decent topping on a 9×13 pan. I’m afraid to pour this soupy sauce like topping over the apple sauce mixture I cooked per your recipe. Seems like it will be soup
Love this recipe. It’s so easy and delicious.
For those saying the sauce is runny, it is supposed to be. That liquid gets absorbed by the apples and the biscuit topping while baking, leaving a saucy blob of gooey apple gunk under the biscuit blanket. Perfection.
Also, the biscuit batter for the topping is… also… supposed to be runny. It should flow like a thick liquid, almost like pancake batter. Even a little runnier than pancake batter. It will float on top of the liquid regardless and will cook into a nice, soft biscuit topping that, once spooned into a bowl after cooking, provides exactly the right amount of support for the apple soup that comes with it.

Measurements were all over the place. Way too much water with the apples and I had to add half a cup of flour to the topping because otherwise it had the consistency of pancake batter. Not good. I should’ve read the previous review before starting. 😭

Great flavor. However, it came out way too liquidy. I am a baker and followed the recipe to a T. And it still came out with way too much liquid. Really disappointed.
Made this last night with the recommended apple equipment. I was super sketch at first but I am now a LOVER of the apple corer and peeler. I too needed to add a bit more starch to thicken the mixture but it was absolutely delicious. Added a bit of nutmeg with cinnamon to the top.
I needed a large dessert for Bible Study group so I doubled the recipe. It was spectacular! I did add a little extra corn starch to the filling to thicken it up a little bit more. Came out perfectly and I am making one, as written, for a friend who absolutely loved it, for Thanksgiving!
Oh, and Miyoko’s vegan butter, and plant-based milk, also. So, this dessert can be made for vegans also. The FDA has ruled Besti allulose is not sugar-free, but drastically “fewer calories & produces only negligible increases in blood glucose or insulin levels.”
I am on a keto diet and used Besti allulose instead of sugar, Bob Red mill paleo flour instead of flour, Sukrin gold sugarless brown “suger” and all the non-keto eaters have been raving about this dessert. Easy, flexible & oh so fabulous!

I didn’t have milk so I used buttermilk. Read post about topping being too runny, so I added 3 tbsp flour. Loved it, absolutely love it. Is a little too tart for us. How much more sugar should I add? Will definitely make again, with milk next time.
Recently had my first Peach Cobbler when I visited a friend in North Carolina. It was so good. I am not the baker in the family but had the urge to make on at home. Since it wasn’t the best time of year in PA to get peaches, my husband said to try and an apple cobbler instead. I found this recipe and decided to attempt to make it. All I can say is WOW. This cobbler is easy to make and so delicious! I made two, one to freeze for the holidays and one to eat now. My husband, daughter and grandson loved it, and my son-in-law who is an apple pie snob, had to confess he was skeptical at first, but “could be persuaded to cross over to cobbler”. Can I use cherry pie filling instead of apples?
I made this once with a 30-ounce can of country cherry pie filling and once with a can of sliced peaches. If you try that I suggest leaving out much of the sweet, gooey sauce that comes in those cans.
Should the apple mixture be cooled before adding topping since there is butter in biscuit topping.

Great recipe for dinner parties, my cobbler was a hit! People loved the excess caramel at the bottom, which was great since there was quite some at the bottom and I was worried that it was too little dough and lots of juice. this is a new favourite for us, thanks!

I made this a month or so ago and it turned out perfect (cooked it in a Dutch oven on a fire) and the last 2 times I have cooked it in the oven the top becomes all crispy but “cake” is still runny inside… what am I doing wrong!?

Followed the recipe exactly – I used a variety of Granny Smith – honey crisp – pink lady (prob about 8 cups all chopped up)… and I sprinkled the top with cinnamon sugar rather than just cinnamon.
Easy to follow, and very yummy.I added a cup of fresh blueberries topped it with vanilla ice cream and a caramel cream drizzle. (whipped cream optional)
I made this x10 for a buffet. It worked out great, but I made some changes for that size batch – reduced the nutmeg total to 1/2T (it is a very potent spice), increased the brown sugar to about 2#, reduced the baking powder to 4T. Also, I used frozen apples and reduced the water/apple juice amount down by about 1/3. You can always add more water. Taste and adjust your spice/seasoning level after instruction #2.
I do alot of cooking, but very little baking. This recipe was easy and excellent, a huge hit. Use apple juice if you can.

Delicious cobbler! I added a bit more brown sugar since the apples were quite tart.
I followed the directions as written. I found the cobbler to be too sweet and the crust thin. I will try to make it again with adjustments.
Made this recipe and it turned out like soup. 1 cup flour and 1 cup sugar with 3/4 cup of milk is very thin. Was this a misprint ?

I held out the butter from the batter; I topped the batter with chopped pecans, sprinkled a little brown sugar and cinnamon then poured the melted butter over it as evenly as possible. It was delicious!

I made the Apple Cobbler yesterday. I followed the recipe but I cut down on the sugar for the batter, I chickened out watching all those calories being poured into the bowl, frightening! Anyway, the apples were lovely but I was a little suspect about the batter topping, it looked uncooked underneath despite being cooked for the full 40 minutes. Was it supposed to look like that I wonder? I’ll make it again but I guess I’ll need to cook it for maybe 50 minutes, even a full hour?

Made this yesterday. Cut the sugar amount in half and it was still super sweet, I’ll use less next time. I used Gala and Honeycrisp apples and added walnuts to the topping. It was delicious and I will make it again. Thank you for the recipe.

This was so good! Didn’t change a thing (except I might have spilled in a little more cinnamon because we’re cinnamon freaks around here). Nice and sweet but not sickly. Top was perfect.

I made this as a last minute dessert to take with me to a friend’s house for lunch. So easy! I was out of cornstarch so I substituted 2 Tablespoons of tapioca starch flour. Easy to make and so very delicious!!! Everyone loved it!

I made this for my mother’s 94th birthday. She likes apples so I made this instead of a cake. She loved it and so did her grandchildren that don’t like dessert. I added some cranberries which gave it a bit of a tart flavor. Just the same it came out awesome.
This was easy to make and delicious! I prepared the apples a day ahead and the breading Christmas morning. Put it together and in the oven when we sat down for Christmas dinner, and it was a wonderful dessert. Thank you for this recipe.

I made this for Thanksgiving since I didn’t want to take the time to make a whole pie. It was my first time having cobbler and it was amazing!! This recipe was so easy to follow and it tasted absolutely delicious. I definitely recommend slicing the apples nice and thin (1/4 inch as recipe says) because they turned out perfectly cooked through. Still had a bit of structure, but were perfectly fork tender. This is going to be a staple in my kitchen! 10/10!
Going to make a second time and add fresh cranberries with the apples.
How did it taste adding cranberries with the apples? Someone gave me two grocery size bags of sweet apples so I’d like to add something more tart. Do you have any other ideas?
I made this apple cobbler tonight and I was not disappointed!!! It is so good and gooey. I tweaked it a little toy liking…less apples (I used pink lady picked from the local farm), added sugar to the filing recipe (I used the brown sugar as suggested too) and I used margarine instead of butter. I love it!!
Did you use salted or unsalted butter?
Either is fine. Just leave out the salt if you use salted butter.

Doubled up to make a bigger batch and it was still perfect! And if you have no nutmeg crushed allspice worked beautifully!

This was my first time making an apple cobbler from scratch. I have used canned apples but never made my own filling. Until now! This was soooo good! I will never used canned apples again. I made this to take to a friend’s house for dinner. I followed the recipe perfectly, adding two baked sweet potatoes to the topping mixture. It was a hit!

We picked 1/2 bushel of Zestar apples today and needed something to do with them. Found your recipe, used 7 apples, cooked maybe a little longer in pot than mentioned, but it came out great! Was a big hit with everyone. If we need to use up more apples I will make several batches of filling and freeze. Thanks for that tip and the recipe.

Absolutely delicious! I like the balanced blend of the soft fluffy crust, slightly bitter apples, with just the right amount of sugar in the sauce! The family loved it! I changed nothing in the recipe.
So I was out of lemon juice, and my husband is allergic to cinnamon. I traded one for one apple cider vinegar for the lemon juice. I cut out the cinnamon and used an entire teaspoon of nutmeg instead. Other than that I stuck to the recipe. I have never seen my has been so excited about food before. He almost cried and said he hasn’t tasted anything like that since he was little before his allergy developed. Thank you so much!
Try adding cardamon seeds to the mix with the nutmeg. It is a nice replacement for cinnamon.

I love to make all types of foods, I am from the south, so cobblers and soul foods are my favorite things to make, and I like this recipe.
This is my third time making my apple cobbler using your recipe and that says a lot for me. In the past, i made the Southern-style dumplings for the topping, but once i went through your recipe, I opted for the cake-like topping and everyone loved it. The one adjustment I made was to use 1 + cup of sugar – depends on the apple variety We do not care for very sugary desserts especially if it is going to be topped with something sweet like ice-cream. So far, we have eaten it sans any extra topping. Great eating…Love it & thanks for sharing this recipe

It was a delicious cobbler but however my batter didn’t look presentable. It fell through the apples and when it was finished baking, the apples were visible and the batter sunk through. Would you perhaps know the reason why? This recipe is a keeper so I will definitely be using it again.

My batter was the same way. Too wet so it sank when I baked it. I assume I have to adjust the milk.
I made this for my 2 girls and they are in love. This is a big deal as my 12 year old is so picky but she asked for a second serving. The only reason I didn’t taste it is because I’m doing the low-carb thing, but it smelled up the house beautifully. I followed everything to the letter except I didn’t have nutmeg. The topping didn’t really sink through when I poured it on top of the apples but it barely covered them all. However, it did spread some upon baking. The worst part was peeling the apples…then smooth sailing. I cur the apples in all different sizes for fun. Definitely a keeper and will make again.
My batter also sunk. Next time I wont use so much water in the apple mixture. It sure made my whole house smell good.
To combat the watery topping issue, I simply upped the amount of flour to 1 3/4 cups. Beyond that I used boiling water in place of the milk (1/2 cup) and instead of melted butter I used chilled butter and cut it into the dry ingredients until it it resembled course crumbs then added the water. Perfection!!
Instead of using milk for the batter, can I use water instead? What would it do to consistency and taste?
This was good though I’d use 1/4 the amount of nutmeg next time. My 7 smallish apples fit into a large pie plate, with raised rim, very nicely. I added lemon zest as well as dried cherries and cranberries. Guests enjoyed it very much.
I merged two recipes, I used this recipe for the filling and it was amazing!But I used a crumbly topping from another recipe. It was my first cobbler and it was delicious. I posted the photos on Instagram @sistshatty.

As a first time cobbler maker, this was an amazing and simple recipe to follow, I halved the recipe and used Gala apples and it came out absolutely phenomenal!

I usually make a crisp or a pie… but this was way easier and SO good! Great recipe – and despite the fact that I messed up and put in 1/2 tsp of salt with the apples (instead of 1/8, still wonderful. I was able to use up apples that we weren’t enjoying as plain eating apples, and in these days of not being able to food shop easily, that’s a good thing.

I’m just making this now I’m so excited it’s in the oven smells amazing but I could not figure out the recipe calls for 1 cup water or apple juice but the instruction dont say what to do with it so I just omitted it hope it still works…

I made cobbler for the first time using this recipe for Christmas Dinner with my boyfriends family (talk about pressure!) This was fantastic! Only thing I tweaked was added more cinnamon and lemon juice.

I just took it out of the over – looks and smells amazing! Question – you mention water or apple juice in the recipe but it’s nowhere in the procedure. I added it in the saucepan with the apples. Hope that was right!
My middle daughter is the pickiest eater and had a critique for everything I make. As she finished her first bite she comes around the corner and says “it smells like menards at Christmas time, but it actually tastes really good”. I’m in shock she actually ate it and asked for more. Thank you!!
