German Pancakes was one of my favorite breakfasts growing up, and I've loved watching it become one of my kids' favorite breakfasts now. They love how the german pancakes puff up in the pan while they cook in the oven.
Top them with powdered sugar and syrup and they're to die for!
If these are new to you (as they were to my husband, Jeff), make them! Make them NOW! You wont regret it. 🙂
What are German Pancakes?
German pancakes, often called Dutch Baby pancakes are baked pancakes made from eggs, milk, flour and vanilla. The pancakes are baked in a metal or cast iron pan, puff up in the oven and then fall as they cool.
How to make German Pancakes:
- Add 5 tablespoons of butter to a 9×13 inch baking and place it in your preheating oven to melt.
- Meanwhile, add the eggs, milk, flour, salt and vanilla to a blender; cover and blend until smooth. Pour batter into the baking dish, over the melted butter.
3. Bake until the edges are golden brown and puffy, about 22-27 minutes.
4. Serve warm, sprinkle generously with powdered sugar and syrup.

Oh my goodness!!! I have never had or made German pancakes. I had never even heard of them, but I’m so glad I did. These were absolutely delicious. My family of 3 ate the whole pan of them. They turned out beautiful. Your recipe was so easy and clear. Thank you so much!!
My Husband And I Love Pancakes And Your German Pancakes Recipe Is Absolutely Delicious! Plus, Super Simple! We Have Made This Dozens Of Times!! Just Live It!! Thank You So Much!
Loved this. Rose amazingly and so delicious. My favorite recipe to date.
I’ve used this recipe several times and each time it turned out perfect. I would like to add cheese to it. I don’t know if that will change the outcome.
Delicious! Fluffed up a lot. We topped with maple syrup, mixed berries and whipped cream.
Sorry for the low stars but this did not turn out as expected. Maybe this is my fault but it was completely flat. In other recipes I have added baking soda. This one doesn’t call for any. Also used a glass pan not a metal one. It was still eatable but not great.
Don’t know what went wrong? Only adjustment I made was using Oat Milk?
Turned out tasteless and the sides rose so high that they burned while the center remained flat.
Oh no, sorry to hear that! Using oat milk should generally be fine, but it might affect the texture a bit differently than dairy milk.
That’s a complete alteration of the recipe!
Oat “milk” is very different in its chemical makeup than true dairy.
Turned out perfect
Love how easy and yummy it is. It’s like a pancake yet not. Nice way to switch it up. It’s also very basic so you could easily play around with it.
Thank you for the recipe! I made this for my wife for our 40th anniversary 🫶 made some raspberry syrup too 😍
Would attach pics if I could 😀
Delicious and so easy to make.
this was so fun easy to make and it was so delicious. I made it for my husband’s birthday breakfast. He said he likes these WAY better than regular pancakes. The Kids loved it as well. I loved that I didn’t need to go out and buy a specific ingredient I had everything in the kitchen.
