German Pancakes was one of my favorite breakfasts growing up, and I've loved watching it become one of my kids' favorite breakfasts now. They love how the german pancakes puff up in the pan while they cook in the oven.
Top them with powdered sugar and syrup and they're to die for!
If these are new to you (as they were to my husband, Jeff), make them! Make them NOW! You wont regret it. 🙂
What are German Pancakes?
German pancakes, often called Dutch Baby pancakes are baked pancakes made from eggs, milk, flour and vanilla. The pancakes are baked in a metal or cast iron pan, puff up in the oven and then fall as they cool.
How to make German Pancakes:
- Add 5 tablespoons of butter to a 9×13 inch baking and place it in your preheating oven to melt.
- Meanwhile, add the eggs, milk, flour, salt and vanilla to a blender; cover and blend until smooth. Pour batter into the baking dish, over the melted butter.

3. Bake until the edges are golden brown and puffy, about 22-27 minutes.
4. Serve warm, sprinkle generously with powdered sugar and syrup.

These were SOOOO delicious. But can someone tell me why they turned out paper thin in the center? They don’t look like the picture and the sides rose VERY high but the center thin as a sheet of paper! Still tasted sooo delicious though so I’m not complaining too much 😂
You can use a smaller pan to get a thicker result. And if you halved the recipe like I do, you definitely want to use a smaller pan, like 8×8.
These pancakes are out of this world delicious!!! 😋 It’s now become somewhat of a tradition that we make them every Saturday. And soooo easy.
Oh my goodness!!! I have never had or made German pancakes. I had never even heard of them, but I’m so glad I did. These were absolutely delicious. My family of 3 ate the whole pan of them. They turned out beautiful. Your recipe was so easy and clear. Thank you so much!!
My Husband And I Love Pancakes And Your German Pancakes Recipe Is Absolutely Delicious! Plus, Super Simple! We Have Made This Dozens Of Times!! Just Live It!! Thank You So Much!
I have made this several times now and love it every single time. I have never tried it with syrup though…the first time I made it I sprinkled it with powdered sugar and topped it with lemon juice, blueberries, blackberries, and strawberries. I realized that the berries were a bit too flavorful and took away from the experience if eating the pancake. So I recommend just having this with powdered sugar and lemon juice squeezed on top. For whatever reason this combination is just phenomenal 😍!
Can these be frozen then reheated?
This is thee ONLY German pancake recipe I allow in my kitchen. My family calls it Dutch monkey and it’s a hit everytime I make it!!!
Yes I did try it, I didn’t have any milk so I used 1 cup of whipping cream, very good would make it again
Love this recipe, very easy to make. I heated up a little homemade apple pie filling and used that as a topping, with a little powdered sugar sprinkled over the whole thing. Tasted great!
On my birthday my husband made me this recipe and it was delicious. It was a great detail, he barely knows how to cook and coming across your recipe gave him the confidence to try to cook more. Thank you!
We love this recipe and make it often! Super quick and easy, and it feels like a wholesome meal to start the day. I like it with sautéed apples, my kids prefer powdered sugar and sprinkles 🙂
I’m from Germany and have never seen anything like this in my life. Our pancakes are like crepes but with more flour and less eggs. We roll them up with marmalade or Nutella. These sound and look delicious, though.
I had never heard of this dish until my new step children started suggesting it for a special holiday breakfast. I looked it up and at first glance (pictures) I was a little intimidated. But it really is so simple and delicious and the ingredients are always on hand. I’ve made it several times now, and have been deemed to have the best German pancakes (over their grandmother and mother who have made them for years). Mine always turn out nice and puffy while theirs are less so. The only differences in mine is that I hand whip the eggs to get them nice and frothy and bubbly first. Then I mix in the rest, also by hand. I add some nutmeg. Otherwise I follow the recipe exactly as is. I use a glass pan and usually cut the time down by a couple minutes to prevent over browning or burning the top. I usually cook for about 20 minutes but watch it closely at the end. It always turns out beautifully and the whole family loves it.
I have always known this to be served with lemon juice and the powdered sugar.
Maple Syrup AND Powdered Sugar would be double too sweet.
