This microwave Chocolate Mug Cake recipe will become your new obsession; it's the easiest and fastest way to make dessert for one or two, and you wont believe how delicious it is! This mug cake recipe is made with chocolate chips and no eggs.

My late-night sweet tooth is a real thing and it has led to the creation of some of my favorite dessert recipes, like S'mores Bars, Blintzes, and Monster Cookies. But nothing beats a chocolate cake in a mug or cup in just one minute, in the microwave!

An easy chocolate mug cake in a white mug with chocolate chips sprinkled on top.

I tried my first mug cake recipe a few years ago and it was a disaster.  A few days later I tried another recipe.  Again, a disaster.  Most recipes were dry and tasteless, and contained eggs.

Inspired by my favorite chocolate cake recipe, I set out to develop a rich chocolate mug cake without eggs (you don't need a whole egg, for only one serving of cake), that wasn't dry or spongy and that satisfied my chocolate cake craving.  I'm so excited to share the best chocolate mug cake recipe with you!

Ingredients Needed:

All of the ingredients needed to make the best chocolate mug cake recipe on a baking sheet: flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, salt, milk, canola oil, vanilla, and chocolate chips.

How to make a Chocolate Mug Cake:

Combine Dry Ingredients: Pour flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt in your mug.

All of the dry ingredients needed for a quick chocolate mug cake in a white mug.

Add Wet Ingredients: Pour in milk, canola oil, and vanilla extract. Stir until smooth.

The batter for chocolate mug cake being stirred with a whisk, and that whisk being lifted from the white mug.

Stir in Chocolate Chips.

Microwave: Cook in the microwave then let this easy chocolate mug cake rest for one minute before diving in!

Additional Add-In Ideas:

For a Healthier Mug Cake:

  • Sugar: Cut the amount in half, or substitute an artificial sugar sweetener or honey.
  • Oil: Replace with applesauce, or coconut oil.
  • Flour: Use white whole wheat flour.

Can I make it dairy free?

To make dairy-free chocolate mug cake, substitute almond milk or soy milk, use non-dairy butter or coconut oil, and dairy free chocolate chips.

Instructions

  • Spray the bottom of a microwave-safe mug or coffee cup  lightly with cooking spray.
Add flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt and stir together.
  • Add milk, canola oil, and vanilla extract and stir until smooth, being sure to scrape the bottom of the mug. Stir in chocolate chips or sprinkle them on top.
  • Cook in microwave for 70-90 seconds (see note) until cake is just set, but still barely shiny on top. (see notes below). Allow to rest in microwave for 1 minute before consuming.

Notes

*Because all microwaves are different, it's difficult to give a precise cook time.  Start with 70 seconds, wait 1 minute while it cools, then look to see if it is set. Add an additional 15-25 seconds if needed. Allow it to rest in the microwave for 1 minute. The trick with mug cakes is to stop cooking the cake earlier than you think, because you want it to be soft on the inside, and the cake will also continue to cook as it cools.
Add-In Ideas:

This is the best mug cake and a VERY forgiving recipe. I have used dark cocoa hot chocolate mix I had and it turned out perfect every time. I also ran out of baking powder and added a touch of baking soda – also turned out fantastic! I never added chocolate chips but I let the bottom remain gooey and it’s like a lava cake. Best recipe!

I made this today using gluten free flour and lactose free milk called Fairlife. I also used half sugar and half Splenda. It is fantastic! My DH and I will make this again!

Excellent! My first time making mug cake, but not my last. I used: Half and Half, Self Rising Flour, Real Butter, Hershey’s cocoa, and I added a splash of Cuban coffee with sugar that I had just made. I added a few TollHouse Semi-Sweet Morsels. Cooked for 70 seconds in a wide mug. It was cake texture on the outside and moist and fudgy on the inside. Just perfect!

If it came out tasting horrible then you and your friend obviously didn’t get everything right. It’s a straightforward chocolate mug that’s pretty failproof, try another go at it and make sure to pay close attention to the instructions and ingredient list.

I tried making two cups, one for me and one for my son. I put one in the microwave for 70 seconds. I checked it and it wasn’t rising so I cooked it for 20 seconds more. Still not rising. So I tried putting baking ‘soda’ in it but it was too late since it was partially done. I took the second cup and added 1/4 tsp. of baking soda then microwaved it for 1 min. and 45 seconds. Perfect! All of the other mug cake recipes call for baking soda not baking powder?? And yes my baking powder was fresh. I gave it 4 stars because the second one was delish!

I agree with the eww. Followed the recipe exactly and it didn’t rise and was very chewie. I swapped out baking soda for baking powder the second round, since there’s not an acid present to activate the baking powder, and it was still chewie and unpleasant tasting. I definitely don’t recommend this recipe.
