Make Homemade Ranch Dressing from scratch in just 5 minutes with simple ingredients like buttermilk, mayo, Greek yogurt, and fresh herbs. It's creamy, tangy, and tastes so much better than store-bought!

This homemade Ranch Dressing recipe uses real ingredients and can be made in just 5 minutes. It tastes fresh and so much better than store-bought!

I make this easy Ranch Dressing recipe every week.

Once I started making my own ranch dressing, I couldn't go back to the bottled stuff. The difference is that dramatic (store-bought ranch tastes flat and artificial in comparison). Plus it's cheaper to make yourself, and better for you. And my kids devour veggies when they can dip them in homemade ranch. You can adjust how thick you want it, so whether you are dipping crispy chicken wings, or want it thinner for a wedge salad or a pizza drizzle.

Ditch the expensive store-bought bottles and make your own sauces, like Homemade Salsa, Shrimp Cocktail Sauce, Ricotta Cheese, BBQ Sauce, Teriyaki Sauce, or Hot Fudge!

How to make Homemade Ranch Dressing:

Combine: In a mixing bowl, stir together mayonnaise, sour cream, vinegar, and all of the seasonings. Gradually add the buttermilk while you stir until you've reached your desired consistency. Refrigerate for at least one hour before serving then keep in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. Enjoy homemade ranch on a salad, buddha bowl, sweet pork burrito bowl, homemade breadsticks, pizza, veggies, or chicken wings!

Learn how to make ranch dressing by combining fresh ingredients from your fridge and pantry to create a restaurant style ranch dressing recipe that tastes great with veggies, over salad, pizza, chicken wings, or literally anything!

Ranch Dressing Recipe

Author: Lauren Allen
This easy Ranch Dressing recipe is made from scratch in just 5 minutes with buttermilk, mayo, and herbs you probably already have in your kitchen. Homemade ranch beats store-bought every time.
Prep: 5 minutes
Refrigerate: 1 hour
Total: 1 hour 5 minutes
Servings: 6

Equipment

Ingredients

  • 1 cup real mayonnaise
  • 1/2 cup Greek yogurt , or sour cream (or ½ and 1/2)
  • ½ teaspoon white vinegar
  • ¼ cup fresh chopped parsley, (or ½ tsp dried parsley)
  • 2 Tablespoons fresh chopped chives, , or ½ tsp dried chives
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried dill weed
  • 1 clove garlic, , minced
  • 1/8 teaspoon paprika
  • freshly cracked sea salt and pepper, , to taste
  • ¼ – ½ cup buttermilk, , as needed to desired consistency

Instructions

  • In a medium sized bowl whisk together mayonnaise, Greek yogurt (or sour cream), vinegar and seasonings.
1 cup real mayonnaise, ½ cup Greek yogurt, ½ teaspoon white vinegar, ¼ cup fresh chopped parsley, 2 Tablespoons fresh chopped chives, ½ teaspoon dried dill weed, 1 clove garlic, ⅛ teaspoon paprika, freshly cracked sea salt and pepper
  • Whisk in the buttermilk until desired consistency for dipping or ranch salad dressing. Taste and add more salt and pepper, if needed.
    ¼ – ½ cup buttermilk
  • For best flavor, refrigerate for at least one hour before serving. Store in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.

Notes

Yield: About 2 cups Ranch Dressig. Serving Size: ⅓ cup.
How to Store Ranch Dressing: Check the expiration on your dairy ingredients to get the best idea for how long to store your homemade ranch dressing. It should stay fresh for about 2 weeks in the refrigerator.
Flavor Variations:
  • Add tang: Squeeze a little citrus (orange, lemon, or lime) for extra tangy flavor.
  • Bacon: Add ¼ cup of bacon crumbles.
  • Cheese: Add ¼ cup freshly grated parmesan cheese
  • Cilantro Ranch Dressing: Add ½ bunch of cilantro and 1 tomatillo and add all ingredients to a food processor. Blend until smooth.
  • Jalapeño Ranch Dressing: add 1 jalapeño pepper (seeds removed for milder spice) and blend all ingredients in food processor until smooth.
  • No buttermilk?  Either make your own, or if you prefer ranch without buttermilk, leave out the buttermilk and add a little more mayo or yogurt, with a splash of milk.
  • Dairy-free/Vegan Ranch Dressing: Substitute vegan mayo in place of mayonnaise and Greek yogurt and substitute almond milk (mixed with about 1 tsp of lemon juice) in place of buttermilk.

This is the first time I’ve made ranch dressing. I usually buy it at the store. It turned out delicious! I made the buttermilk but didn’t add the extra vinegar that was a part of the recipe and it still turned out well. I used plain greek yogurt and mayo combination and not the sour cream and mayo combination. I added a little extra pepper and a little extra salt, but it didn’t really need too much more and it tastes great! Thank you Lauren

Can I swap anything for the parsley? I don’t like parsley or cilantro (picky eater haha). Thanks!
