German Pancakes was one of my favorite breakfasts growing up, and I've loved watching it become one of my kids' favorite breakfasts now. They love how the german pancakes puff up in the pan while they cook in the oven.
Top them with powdered sugar and syrup and they're to die for!
If these are new to you (as they were to my husband, Jeff), make them! Make them NOW! You wont regret it. 🙂
What are German Pancakes?
German pancakes, often called Dutch Baby pancakes are baked pancakes made from eggs, milk, flour and vanilla. The pancakes are baked in a metal or cast iron pan, puff up in the oven and then fall as they cool.
How to make German Pancakes:
- Add 5 tablespoons of butter to a 9×13 inch baking and place it in your preheating oven to melt.
- Meanwhile, add the eggs, milk, flour, salt and vanilla to a blender; cover and blend until smooth. Pour batter into the baking dish, over the melted butter.

3. Bake until the edges are golden brown and puffy, about 22-27 minutes.
4. Serve warm, sprinkle generously with powdered sugar and syrup.

These pancakes are out of this world delicious!!! 😋 It’s now become somewhat of a tradition that we make them every Saturday. And soooo easy.
Oh my goodness!!! I have never had or made German pancakes. I had never even heard of them, but I’m so glad I did. These were absolutely delicious. My family of 3 ate the whole pan of them. They turned out beautiful. Your recipe was so easy and clear. Thank you so much!!
My Husband And I Love Pancakes And Your German Pancakes Recipe Is Absolutely Delicious! Plus, Super Simple! We Have Made This Dozens Of Times!! Just Live It!! Thank You So Much!
Perfection!
Paul and I love this recipe. Made it several times, added some cinnamon to the batter, knew I was making apple filling, this recipe is so easy to make and it is delish. It also fills the house with a fragrant vanilla scent.
This was so easy and good. I added cinnamon and served with chopped apples. Next time I’ll add pecans.
I made this on Christmas morning. There are only three of us, so I only made one batch. I opted to use two 10 inch cake cake pans because I am not fond of my 9 x 13 metal pan. I split the recipe in half (including the butter), yet one pancake stuck to the pan horribly. I am not sure what I did wrong. We sprinkled both with powdered sugar and served with maple syrup. One was ugly, but both tasted deliscious. I kept it simple with just sausage and bacon on the side. I am a recent empty nester, but my son wanted the recipe to try at his own home.
Can i use a glass 9×13? What would I do differently?
Yes, that’s fine.
Amazing! I sprinkled wild blueberries in it before baking. It turned out delicious! We also added lemon juice , powdered sugar, and syrup at the table. My whole family loved it! My teen daughter said this is like something you would get at Starbucks! I will definitely be making this again! Thank you!
Everything 😋😋
Absolutely delicious, easy to make, Paul wants it again for Christmas Eve!! Shared it with my sisters.
My butter melted slightly, started browning and popping all over my oven. I had to quickly put another pan onto it and then take it out, stir the butter to melt and then put in the batter. Beware of what could happen. House full of smoke and now smokey over due to butter being everywhere. I’ve made German pancakes in a cast iron and this never happened, decided to use this with my metal pan and I won’t do that again
sorry that happened, I think you may have left the butter in the oven too long.
Just making one for my husband. Cut this recipe into thirds so 1/3 cup flour and milk and two eggs, 2 TBSP Butter. Perfect for one!
