This microwave Chocolate Mug Cake recipe will become your new obsession; it's the easiest and fastest way to make dessert for one or two, and you wont believe how delicious it is! This mug cake recipe is made with chocolate chips and no eggs.

My late-night sweet tooth is a real thing and it has led to the creation of some of my favorite dessert recipes, like S'mores Bars, Blintzes, and Monster Cookies. But nothing beats a chocolate cake in a mug or cup in just one minute, in the microwave!

An easy chocolate mug cake in a white mug with chocolate chips sprinkled on top.

I tried my first mug cake recipe a few years ago and it was a disaster.  A few days later I tried another recipe.  Again, a disaster.  Most recipes were dry and tasteless, and contained eggs.

Inspired by my favorite chocolate cake recipe, I set out to develop a rich chocolate mug cake without eggs (you don't need a whole egg, for only one serving of cake), that wasn't dry or spongy and that satisfied my chocolate cake craving.  I'm so excited to share the best chocolate mug cake recipe with you!

Ingredients Needed:

All of the ingredients needed to make the best chocolate mug cake recipe on a baking sheet: flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, salt, milk, canola oil, vanilla, and chocolate chips.

How to make a Chocolate Mug Cake:

Combine Dry Ingredients: Pour flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt in your mug.

All of the dry ingredients needed for a quick chocolate mug cake in a white mug.

Add Wet Ingredients: Pour in milk, canola oil, and vanilla extract. Stir until smooth.

The batter for chocolate mug cake being stirred with a whisk, and that whisk being lifted from the white mug.

Stir in Chocolate Chips.

Microwave: Cook in the microwave then let this easy chocolate mug cake rest for one minute before diving in!

Additional Add-In Ideas:

For a Healthier Mug Cake:

  • Sugar: Cut the amount in half, or substitute an artificial sugar sweetener or honey.
  • Oil: Replace with applesauce, or coconut oil.
  • Flour: Use white whole wheat flour.

Can I make it dairy free?

To make dairy-free chocolate mug cake, substitute almond milk or soy milk, use non-dairy butter or coconut oil, and dairy free chocolate chips.

Instructions

  • Spray the bottom of a microwave-safe mug or coffee cup  lightly with cooking spray.
Add flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt and stir together.
  • Add milk, canola oil, and vanilla extract and stir until smooth, being sure to scrape the bottom of the mug. Stir in chocolate chips or sprinkle them on top.
  • Cook in microwave for 70-90 seconds (see note) until cake is just set, but still barely shiny on top. (see notes below). Allow to rest in microwave for 1 minute before consuming.

Notes

*Because all microwaves are different, it's difficult to give a precise cook time.  Start with 70 seconds, wait 1 minute while it cools, then look to see if it is set. Add an additional 15-25 seconds if needed. Allow it to rest in the microwave for 1 minute. The trick with mug cakes is to stop cooking the cake earlier than you think, because you want it to be soft on the inside, and the cake will also continue to cook as it cools.

Don’t recommend using flaky salt, strawberry milk and hot cocoa instead of cocoa powder

Excellent! I’ve made it 3 times and it turned out well. I did use a small bowl fir mixing and then poured into a mug. I also tried 3 T. Gluten-free Better Batter flour with GF chocolate chips and it was really good, especially with a little whipped cream on the top.

Made as close to recipe as possible, with only sub being oat milk and olive oil (we don’t do dairy and canola/vegetable oil, and i was out of coconut/avocado oil). Doubled it in a 12oz mug, microwaved for 2 min in a 700w microwave. Absolutely scrumptious!

I didn’t love this recipe. The texture of the mug cake was spongy and there was’t much flavor, despite the fact that I added chocolate chips.

I can’t stop making this recipe. It’s very easy and uses ingredients that I actually have in my pantry. Thanks for sharing and can you please buy me a gym membership so I lose all the weight I’ve gained because of this recipe? haha

How would you suggest I go about making a larger quantity to just add the wet ingredients at time of microwaving? We made this recipe tonight and it was a HUGE hit. I am looking for an easier way make this after dinner without taking out all the ingredients. Thank you.

Amazing recipe! Not too sweet and 75 seconds was perfect. I used butter instead of oil as that is my preference.
