This microwave Chocolate Mug Cake recipe will become your new obsession; it's the easiest and fastest way to make dessert for one or two, and you wont believe how delicious it is! This mug cake recipe is made with chocolate chips and no eggs.

My late-night sweet tooth is a real thing and it has led to the creation of some of my favorite dessert recipes, like S'mores Bars, Blintzes, and Monster Cookies. But nothing beats a chocolate cake in a mug or cup in just one minute, in the microwave!

I tried my first mug cake recipe a few years ago and it was a disaster.  A few days later I tried another recipe.  Again, a disaster.  Most recipes were dry and tasteless, and contained eggs.

Inspired by my favorite chocolate cake recipe, I set out to develop a rich chocolate mug cake without eggs (you don't need a whole egg, for only one serving of cake), that wasn't dry or spongy and that satisfied my chocolate cake craving.  I'm so excited to share the best chocolate mug cake recipe with you!

Ingredients Needed:

All of the ingredients needed to make the best chocolate mug cake recipe on a baking sheet: flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, salt, milk, canola oil, vanilla, and chocolate chips.

How to make a Chocolate Mug Cake:

Combine Dry Ingredients: Pour flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt in your mug.

All of the dry ingredients needed for a quick chocolate mug cake in a white mug.

Add Wet Ingredients: Pour in milk, canola oil, and vanilla extract. Stir until smooth.

The batter for chocolate mug cake being stirred with a whisk, and that whisk being lifted from the white mug.

Additional Add-In Ideas:

For a Healthier Mug Cake:

  • Sugar: Cut the amount in half, or substitute an artificial sugar sweetener or honey.
  • Oil: Replace with applesauce, or coconut oil.
  • Flour: Use white whole wheat flour.

Can I make it dairy free?

To make dairy-free chocolate mug cake, substitute almond milk or soy milk, use non-dairy butter or coconut oil, and dairy free chocolate chips.

Instructions

  • Spray the bottom of a microwave-safe mug or coffee cup  lightly with cooking spray.
Add flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt and stir together.
  • Add milk, canola oil, and vanilla extract and stir until smooth, being sure to scrape the bottom of the mug. Stir in chocolate chips or sprinkle them on top.
  • Cook in microwave for 70-90 seconds (see note) until cake is just set, but still barely shiny on top. (see notes below). Allow to rest in microwave for 1 minute before consuming.

Notes

*Because all microwaves are different, it's difficult to give a precise cook time.  Start with 70 seconds, wait 1 minute while it cools, then look to see if it is set. Add an additional 15-25 seconds if needed. Allow it to rest in the microwave for 1 minute. The trick with mug cakes is to stop cooking the cake earlier than you think, because you want it to be soft on the inside, and the cake will also continue to cook as it cools.

dudes I don’t normally leave reviews BUT. this is the only mug cake recipe I’ve found that actually has the texture and taste of cake. I sifted all my dry ingredients, so keep that in mind.

Thank you!!! This is a perfect recipe and exactly what I was looking for! I’m so glad that when I searched for a single serving Hershey’s Chocolate Cake recipe, it brought me to you! For decades that was our go-to recipe, but we don’t want a 9×13 or even an 8×8 cake anymore. Thank you so much for figuring it out for the rest of us! (I did make a small change, to bump up the chocolate flavor I added an additional 1 Tbsp. of cocoa, so I reduced the flour to 2 Tbsp., and in the end I needed to add about 1 Tbsp. water to make it the right consistency. It cooked perfectly in 90 seconds. We LOVED it, it tasted just like we remembered!)

Substitute the milk for 1 tbs of water and 2 tbs of sour cream. It’s very rich and moist.

5 stars!! If anyone did not like this then they must have done it wrong. 85 seconds and it was perfect. I put some Xtra choc chips in and when it was done I put icecream on it. I also used veg oil and it worked fine

This chocolate mug cake is fantastic! Unlike some comments, on my opinion it has a great chocolatey flavour! I didn’t have any chocolate chips so I replaced them with a lotus biscuit chocolate bar chunks which worked very well. The only part of the recipe I think I would change is the microwave time. I had my microwave on its highest setting (1000 watts) and found it was still stogy and uncooked after 70 seconds so I did another 20 seconds taking it up to 90, but found it needed longer. In total I cooked it for 1 minute 50 seconds. It’s was lovely and fluffy! Hope this helps!
