This microwave Chocolate Mug Cake recipe will become your new obsession; it’s the easiest and fastest way to make dessert for one or two, and you wont believe how delicious it is! This mug cake recipe is made with chocolate chips and no eggs.

My late-night sweet tooth is a real thing and it has led to the creation of some of my favorite dessert recipes, like S’mores Bars, Blintzes, and Monster Cookies. But nothing beats a chocolate cake in a mug or cup in just one minute, in the microwave!

An easy chocolate mug cake in a white mug with chocolate chips sprinkled on top.

I tried my first mug cake recipe a few years ago and it was a disaster.  A few days later I tried another recipe.  Again, a disaster.  Most recipes were dry and tasteless, and contained eggs.

Inspired by my favorite chocolate cake recipe, I set out to develop a rich chocolate mug cake without eggs (you don’t need a whole egg, for only one serving of cake), that wasn’t dry or spongy and that satisfied my chocolate cake craving.  I’m so excited to share the best chocolate mug cake recipe with you!

Ingredients Needed:

All of the ingredients needed to make the best chocolate mug cake recipe on a baking sheet: flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, salt, milk, canola oil, vanilla, and chocolate chips.

How to make a Chocolate Mug Cake:

Combine Dry Ingredients: Pour flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt in your mug.

All of the dry ingredients needed for a quick chocolate mug cake in a white mug.

Add Wet Ingredients: Pour in milk, canola oil, and vanilla extract. Stir until smooth.

The batter for chocolate mug cake being stirred with a whisk, and that whisk being lifted from the white mug.

Stir in Chocolate Chips.

A white mug filled with the batter for a chocolate mug cake, ready to microwave.

Microwave: Cook in the microwave then let this easy chocolate mug cake rest for one minute before diving in!

Additional Add-In Ideas:

For a Healthier Mug Cake:

  • Sugar: Cut the amount in half, or substitute an artificial sugar sweetener or honey.
  • Oil: Replace with applesauce, or coconut oil.
  • Flour: Use white whole wheat flour.

Can I make it dairy free?

To make dairy-free chocolate mug cake, substitute almond milk or soy milk, use non-dairy butter or coconut oil, and dairy free chocolate chips.

Instructions

  • Spray the bottom of a microwave-safe mug or coffee cup  lightly with cooking spray.
Add flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt and stir together.
  • Add milk, canola oil, and vanilla extract and stir until smooth, being sure to scrape the bottom of the mug. Stir in chocolate chips or sprinkle them on top.
  • Cook in microwave for 70-90 seconds (see note) until cake is just set, but still barely shiny on top. (see notes below). Allow to rest in microwave for 1 minute before consuming.

Notes

*Because all microwaves are different, it’s difficult to give a precise cook time.  Start with 70 seconds, wait 1 minute while it cools, then look to see if it is set. Add an additional 15-25 seconds if needed. Allow it to rest in the microwave for 1 minute. The trick with mug cakes is to stop cooking the cake earlier than you think, because you want it to be soft on the inside, and the cake will also continue to cook as it cools.
Add-In Ideas:
Healthier Mug Cake:
  • Sugar: Cut the amount in half, or substitute an artificial sugar sweetener or honey.
  • Oil: Replace with applesauce, or coconut oil.
  • Flour: Use white whole wheat flour.
Dairy Free: For a dairy free chocolate mug cake, substitute almond or soy milk, use dairy-free butter or coconut oil, and dairy free chocolate chips.

I had all the ingredients and I used the melted butter instead of oil. Had dark chocolate chips. Super easy and it was good! It took care of my craving. For me, 75 sec is all I needed. Thanks!

  2. 3 stars
I’m not sure if maybe I did something wrong but came out almost flavorless I felt like it was missing something.

  3. 5 stars
I’ve tried your recipe and it works perfectly without the egg. I also didn’t add cocoa powder since we didn’t have one. Thanks for this!

  4. This is the best chocolate mug cake ever! Came out nice and fudgy, not too sweet! Thanks for creating such a great recipe!

  5. 5 stars
Easy, quick, delicious! I didn’t have chocolate chips so I plunked a leftover milk chocolate Valentine’s Day heart on top which worked pretty well, and followed the “suggested add-ins” with a wee bit of peanut butter. Really satisfied the cake craving I was having.

  6. 5 stars
YES! This was perfect. I’ve tried other recipes and they were just too dense for my liking. I used melted butter, and pushed a couple of squares of dark choc into the centre once I’d put in my muffin tray – I baked it as I don’t use a microwave. 180 celsius for 20 mins. Add some cream…oh my, it hit the spot.
    Thank you!

  7. This is an excellent recipe. I put a dollop of peanut butter in and sprinkled on some mini chocolate chips. I will probably never bake a cake again! I love a good chocolate cake but the other half doesn’t. I get chocolate cake anytime I want now.

  8. 5 stars
Super easy and very good!! I added the chocolate chips in the batter and extra on top. It was like a gooey cakey brownie! Saving this recipe!!!

  9. 4 stars
Just like all the other chocolate cakes on pinterest, this is the exact same… It is still a good recipe though and i appreciate that you have tried.

  10. 5 stars
I’ve made this several times, as well as the vanilla mug cake and both are delicious. An easy and quickly made dessert for my husband and I, and adding different mix-ins is fun.

  11. 5 stars
I’ve made this mug cake many times since finding the recipe last year. Tonight I tried something different, baking in the air fryer! I tripled the recipe, and used a 4in pyrex pan. Air fried at 400°F for 7 min. It had a nice crust on top but wasn’t cooked thru. Ended up microwaving for 40 seconds to finish cooking the center. The result was so good. Really liked the crusty top, and the center had a lovely crumb. I subbed brown sugar and used about half what the recipe called for. I also chopped some of a Ghirardelli salted caramel chocolate dark Chocolate bar. So so so good!

  12. 5 stars
Fantastic! So easy and so good! 😋 Quick and delicious way to satisfy a craving without having to make an entire cake!

  13. 5 stars
This has to be one of the few mug cake recipes that actually taste good. Glad I tried it out. Chocolate cake craving instantly satisfied 😀

  14. 5 stars
this is my first ever review on a recipe, despite years of baking. i just had to say that this is the first and only mug cake i’ve tried, out of MANY, that actually tasted good !!! all of the ones i’ve tried to make before have been so bitter or chewy. this one was so good!

    1. 5 stars
I’ve never made a mug cake but this delivered on everything I hoped for! Incredible – definitely recommend. Will satisfy that craving.

  15. 5 stars
This recipe surpassed my expectations. My child had a sweet craving and asked me to make cookies. Not wanting to make a whole batch, I made this instead for a single serving. I did not have milk or chocolate chips (substituted 1 Tbsp caramel coffee creamer + 2 Tbsp water for the milk and dropped some Nutella on top). It came out SO DELICIOUS–warm, moist, and not too sweet. It had really nice texture. Will definitely be saving this recipe for the occasional quick sweet fix.

  16. 5 stars
it was a really good recipe! once i perfected the cooking time i usually make this when its a INEEDSOMETHINGSWEETRIGHTTHISSECOND moment! very good recipe!

i burnt my first two lol

  17. 5 stars
This is THE mug cake. So so good! Quick and easy, and tastes great. I used buttermilk and butter, and it turned out fantastic! Had some leftover frosting in the fridge so I plopped that on top, and it was the perfect little treat.

  18. 5 stars
Wow this is so good. I never made a cake in a mug before. This new knowledge is dangerous for me🤣

Ps. Mine took exactly 70 seconds

  19. 5 stars
Super soft and delicious! Not a deep chocolate flavor , but the chocolate chips can make up for that if you use dark chocolate chips. Mine was perfect at 80secs.

  20. 5 stars
This was delicious warm with a scoop of icecream. Just enough to satisfy that craving. I like how it doesn’t need egg. Had this little pudding in the middle of night. So much cheaper and tastier than the artificial puddings from supermarket or Uber delivery.

  21. 5 stars
This tasted so good as a mug cake that I decided try to bake it!

I quadrupled the recipe, poured the batter into a cupcake pan (made 6 filled to the top with batter), and baked it for 200C for 15mins.

It came out moist, soft, and delicious. It is the best chocolate cake recipe I’ve ever made! You have created a great dual purpose recipe that can be a quick, single serve in the microwave or make a delicious batch of cupcakes in the oven.

Thank you so much! I will definitely be using this recipe for all My chocolate cake needs from now on!

  22. 5 stars
This mug cake is so amazing and delicious! Thank you so much for your recipe, it’s so easy to make and a perfect portion. This one goes to my favorite bookmarks!

  23. I lost the recipe I had been using for years and was hesitant to try something new! I had run out of milk, so just used water, and had to use brown instead of granulated sugar. Worked out perfectly, delicious with some icecream!

  24. 5 stars
My mom had her 50th birthday and we wanted to go out but we diden’t find the credit card so we went home and i made her this recipie just now and she was so exited. thank you

  25. 5 stars
best mug cake i’ve ever had!! light and fluffy — is very lenient; I used brown sugar and oat milk and it was delicious 🙂

  26. 5 stars
Hits the spot for the chocolate craving. Subbed butter/oil for 1 tbsp unsweetened apple sauce. Cooked for 80 secs. Super moist still. Definitely don’t skimp on the chocolate chips. Added some whipped cream and mini chips on top. 10/10!

  27. Followed this recipe exactly and added some extra chocolate chips on top once it was cooked. It was so good! Will be making again soon.

  28. 5 stars
Since allergic to wheat, I use gluten-frre flower and I ended up substituting vegetable oil (didn’t have canola oil) but this recipe turned out amazing!! Thank you for this!

  29. 4 stars
Really good! One of the best mug cake recipes I’ve tried. I would, though, and another tablespoon of sugar, but that’s just my taste.

  30. Best chocolate microwave cake I have ever tasted! I don’t like the oil taste, so this was perfect. I added dark brown sugar and peanut butter. Delicious! Thank you 🙏

  31. 5 stars
Love it! I just made it quick for my son that wanted a “cupcake” because he missed out on a birthday party at school. So I made this for him and put some frosting on top! He loves it. Will definitely make again, now I kind of want one!

  32. 5 stars
Very good mug cake! I don’t make them often, but when I do, it’s disappointing when they aren’t tasty or are dry. This recipe is very good. I added more chips then in the recipe, because that’s just me, and microwaved for about 75 seconds. Very good. I will make again!

  33. 2 stars
i made this with my friend and there was no amounts where it tells you what to do so it ended up gross please put the amounts at the top

      1. Soft and fluffy, best ever mug cake I have tried so far.
Warmed the milk before adding so it doesn’t effect the butter.

  34. 5 stars
I’ve been using this recipe for looooonnngggg time, and each time it just gets better and yummyyyy its so good! I suggest not using butter right after you put in the milk, cuz that makes the butter hard again… didnt turn out nice. Also dont try putting the batter into the fridge to bake later… i learnt the hard way lolll i hope you try this recipe!

  35. 5 stars
So good and fast! Only baked for 70 seconds (still looked a little moist around the edges of the mug) and added a teaspoon of peanut butter to the top for “frosting”. I think it took about 5 minutes to throw together. This recipe is better than other chocolate mug cake recipes I’ve tried. Will definitely be making again and again.

  36. 5 stars
Amazing recipe! I added finely chopped dark chocolate (stirred through before microwaving) and cooked for 70s. It came out perfect, moist and super chocolately. I served with vanilla ice cream which just made it incredible!

  37. this cake is great. i felt like having cake (at the time of writing this, it’s 3:25 am), and i found this. thought “eh, may as well try it!”. it’s amazing. thank you recipe maker 🙂

  38. I was home alone one night and perfectly sufficed my cravings. Would do just great for uni! definetly a 10/10.

  39. 5 stars
I cut the sugar in half as suggested, and added 1.5 teaspoons of peanut butter powder. Cooked 70 seconds, perfectly cooked. Yummy!

  40. 5 stars
Accidentally made this using ginger infused canola oil and it gave it a nice kick. It smells weird just as you take it out of the microwave but it tastes great. 10/10 would make again with or without ginger.

  41. Made this recipe but didn’t have any coco powder or anything like it so I subbed the milk for sugar free chocolate milk and added another tbsp of flour. Came out wonderful. It was a bit dense, but still had a pleasant texture. Keeping this recipe for later!

    1. I was home alone one night and perfectly sufficed my cravings. Would do just great for uni! definetly a 10/10.

  42. 5 stars
Just made this for the first time and I am impressed. Definitely saving. I microwaved for 70 seconds and it is nice and moist. I was having a real bad sweet tooth so I topped it with some whipped cream and chocolate syrup. Delicious!

  43. Good flavour but surpass the suggested time in the microwave by about 3 minutes. Good chocolate flavour though,

  44. This was delicious! I have made these in the past and it was a disaster. Hit the spot for this sweet craving pregnant mama!

  45. Is it possible to make this in a toaster oven? I don’t have a microwave. Just wondering what temp and how long.

  46. 5 stars
Moist, chocolatey cake! This is one of the best mug cakes I’ve tried. It is good with oil or melted butter, and will try to sub applesauce next time. I added a mixture of chocolate and peanut butter chips and it is excellent!

  47. 5 stars
I typically do not comment but was surprised someone mentioned it was as dry as the Sahara? I really enjoyed it, I changed out milk for non dairy and didn’t have chocolate chips on hand but I found it super moist! I only microwave 70 seconds and let it set for 1 minute as recommended. Will definitely make again, thanks!!

  48. I do not recommend this recipe. The cake on It’s own, reminds me of the Sahara Desert. It is dry, and quite frankly, the nastiest thing I have literally ever tasted in my life. I also was up all night with an upset stomach because of it. again, I do NOT recommend this recipe!

    1. 5 stars
Mine is super moist! I wonder if you missed a step or cooked it in the microwave too long. I only cooked mine for about 70 seconds and it turned out great.

  49. 5 stars
We made this, we didn’t have chocolate chips so we substituted by pouring chocolate orange ice cream sauce on it after it was cooked, was amazing, like any pre-made shop bought melt in the middle type pudding, really really good and from starting to consumption in 15 mins. Will have with ice-cream next time… there will be lots of next times 🙂

  50. 5 stars
The only chocolate mug cake recipe you will ever need. It’s absolutely perfect!! I made it two days in a row.. will be a challenge not to make it everyday.

  51. 5 stars
I have few sweets in my house and when my granddaughter comes over we make this. She likes it because it’s the perfect size. I like it because I don’t have a big chocolate cake looking at me.

  52. 5 stars
Lauren, I’m not a chocolate fan. Like bold, underline, not. But THIS? So good! I didn’t have unsweetened cocoa powder so I subbed it with hot cocoa mix and going down to just 1 Tbsp sugar. I also accidentally overpoured the vanilla, but looked at it and shrugged LOL. My 5yo sugar monster’s comment was “IT’S SO DELICIOUS!” Thank you for the recipe and making it easy!

  53. 5 stars
I LOVE this mug cake! It’s very easy to make, has a rich chocolate flavour and satisfies my cake cravings. Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream and thank me later 😉

  54. 5 stars
Easy to make and love that you gave options to make it to your own likes. Instead of canola oil I used dark chocolate olive oil! So yummy!!

  55. 5 stars
This chocolate mug cake hits the spot if you need a little chocolate fix. Texture was light with a lot of flavor.

  56. 5 stars
favorite chocolate mug cake recipe! always a go to when im having a late night chocolate craving. super moist and i really like how the chocolate chips make it so fudgy. perfection.

  57. 5 stars
This mug cake is light, fluffy and the perfect amount of chocolate! I absolutely love that it’s eggless because today (2-13-23) eggs are expensive and baking is only happening for special occasions which doesn’t help this mama’s sweet tooth…until now! AND it’s perfect size to share and husband approved!!! Thank you Lauren for sharing this fabulous recipe!

  58. 5 stars
Delicious and easy! This is a keeper. I made it with some of the suggested options – subbed maple syrup & applesauce for the sugar & oil, used mint chips, and added coconut. I needed a little over 100 seconds to get it just right (perhaps a bit longer because of extra liquid from the maple syrup substitution??)

  59. 5 stars
I sent this recipe to my daughters who are attending college since I knew they would have a mug and these basic ingredients on-hand. I decided to test the recipe out for them, and it was outstanding–the texture and taste were great–just like what I’d expect when I eat chocolate cake.

  60. 5 stars
WOW! I love Lauren & Tastes Better from Scratch recipes. This recipe is so delicious and easy, you got to try it!! Love a good mug cake!

  61. I was craving something chocolate but not too sweet. I halved the sugar and used the coconut oil instead. I also had some Valentine’s M&M’s I threw in. This mug cake came out so fluffy yet thick. I am very pleased. Thank you.

  62. 4 stars
I enjoy baking and am always up for an activity which offers a challenge to raise funds for a worthy cause. This mug cake was supper easy and delish!

  63. 5 stars
I recently discovered mug cakes but they’re so overpriced so I was so happy to see this recipe on fb! It was super easy and I added a spoon of Nutella on top as icing

  64. 5 stars
Made this twice the first week of finding the recipe! First time without chocolate chips and second time with. Both tasted great!! I was tickled I already had all the ingredients in my pantry!! Thanks for sharing!

  65. My boys loved this recipe! So yummy and only took 5 min total to make three of them! We will for sure make them again!

  66. 5 stars
This simple mug cake is a delicious way to have just the right sized dessert. I like that all I needed was 2 measuring spoons and a mug. It truly was simple to put together and quick to make. This time I made it exactly as written (and it was delicious)–next time I’m going to add a dollop of peanut butter.

  67. 5 stars
Such a good easy and simple mug cake. My husband and daughter both love it too. And we had all of the ingredients already! I’ve even added protein powder into it and it’s delicious.

  68. 5 stars
I love this chocolate cake in a mug, it’s quick and easy. Great when I’m craving some chocolatey goodness but don’t want to bake a entire cake🙂

  69. 5 stars
I love this recipe! I have created it with almond milk and apple sauce for an healthier treat. Instead of keeping sweet treats on hand to devour in endless quantities, this cake provides an easy sweet treat only when I need it. 💕 Thank you for this recipe!💕

  70. 5 stars
This was a huge success! My husband LOVED this recipe and he is a hard man to please. Super simple and sooo fast!

    1. 5 stars
Update: I have changed the flour to organic hard red wheat, the sugar to organic cane sugar, and the chocolate chips 60% cacao. Jarred up the dry goods so it is easy to grab and make!

  71. 5 stars
We made this mug cake during a snow day from school. Delicious and easy to make! Cake was not dry at all. Highly recommend!

  72. 5 stars
The chocolate mug cake was moist and had a good chocolate flavor. Added a bit of cream cheese with pecan frosting and was very, very good!

  73. 5 stars
Wonderful and so quick and easy to make. I sent the recipe to a friend and her comment was the mug cake was so good she didn’t know if she should burn the recipe or frame it!

  74. 5 stars
Oh my, this is good. Easy, made from scratch, and quick. Came out perfectly. Possibilities are: orange powder (I tried it — lovely subtle taste), a bit of coffee. Yes, I probably will get a little obsessed with it.

  75. Back when my wife was pregnant with our son I “imagineered” a mug cake of sorts to satisfy one of her late night “antojos”. To me it was rather blah but it satisfied her antojo and so scored big. Yesterday morning we were talking about that incident, and would you believe it, a while later this recipe popped through. Last night I made three of these (my sister is visiting right now) only I made a
4x batch and divided it between 3 cups. Was a big hit, perhaps slightly gooey on the bottom, but super delicious with a scoop of strawberry ice-cream. Thanks!

  76. 5 stars
This was exactly what I needed tonight. I love the versatility too. I used 2t coconut oil (it seems to go further) and topped with a spoonful of caramel and walnuts after it was cooked.

  77. 5 stars
This was such a good recipe! I have been trying to find a good mug cake recipe that wasn’t to dense, but this one is perfect!

  78. 5 stars
This made a very delicious mug cake! I made it for three people who all gave it a thumbs up. I was a little skeptical since the recipe didn’t include egg, however the result was amazing! Will definitely make again in the near future.

  79. 5 stars
    Wow, wow wow

Perfection, followed to your recipe and had some low fat squirty cream on top! Yummy! Might make another in a minute, absolutely moreish. X

  80. The 1st time I made this it came out perfect. Then I tried adding chocolate chips , even peanut butter once . Both of the other times of add ins it didn’t cook properly.

  81. 5 stars
This mug cake was very good. It was a nice little treat that satisfied that chocolate craving. will definitely make this again.

  82. 5 stars
Best mug cake recipe out there. I’m going to add more chocolate chips for a creamier center but the original texture is so fluffy and light.

  83. Pretty good, i-need-dessert-in-a-hurry recipe! I’ve made this a few times, and I cook it for less than the specified time in order to have a gooey middle to the chocolate pud. My best tweak to the recipe so far has been to use coconut milk (the thick carton kind), which makes it taste really decadent.

  84. 5 stars
So good! I probably eat way to many of these!! I have one every Saturday for breakfast 😋

  85. 4 stars
Delicious and straightforward. You can use self raising flour if you don’t have baking powder and it’s tasty even without the chocolate chips. I suspect I had a low ratio of liquids to dry ingredients, but that just meant I got a lovely, crisply chewy crust. Especially good with a scoop of ice cream on top.

  86. I love making this. Sometimes I substitute flavored creamers for the milk. It’s a perfect little snack.

  87. 5 stars
All I can say … It’s devine! It’s quick to make, super easy and best off all….hits my sugar craving on the spot! Love it!

  88. 5 stars
It is amazing every time I make these mug cakes it is not good or doesn’t taste like anything but this is delicious

  89. 4 stars
I really loved this recipe!!! Although it was a bit more dense than I was expecting i’m not sure where i went wrong perhaps more time in the microwave, all in all will definitely make again. Total time saver!

  90. Make now and then when have sweet tooth… but do not want/need an entire cake to eat. Love it! 🤗💕

  91. Thanks for this recipe. It was easy, quick and tasty. I doubled it and made in a small casserole dish and it came out perfect at 90 seconds.

  92. 4 stars
Fluffy and tasty. Just the right amount. Will do again. Also will try the vanilla and add butterscotch chips.

  93. 5 stars
It was a quick and delicious cake❣️
Two things I changed. 1. Sugar reduced a half Tbsp. So I put 1 1/2 Tbsp. 2. No cocoa powder, instead 1/4 tsps instant coffee powder. Cuz I didn’t have any cocoa powder today. But it’s a great recipe. Loved it! Ty for sharing it.

  94. 5 stars
This was sooooo good and the consistency was just like a cake. I made myself one then my son tasted it and he HAD to have one. Yummy, keeping this recipe for a late night chocolate fix!!!! I didn’t have chocolate chips so I just did a little powdered sugar/milk and drizzled it.

  95. 4 stars
Exactly what I wanted for a quick late night treat, without havings eggs and turning the oven on. I did use half and half, added extra vanilla extract and chocolate chips. I also added a scoop of nutella to the middle before microwaving for 90 seconds.

  96. 4 stars
This was exactly the rich chocolate cakey and fudgy treat I wanted without having to make a whole cake. I had buttermilk, so I used that. Perfect with whipped cream on top to balance the richness. I will use this recipe again. Thanks!

  97. 5 stars
This is amazing! I’ve tried multiple mug cake recipes , they always come out gooey.
This was perfect cake like texture , perfect sugar content. And It barely took 3 minutes.
    It’s was just PERFECT!
I’m so glad I stumbled upon your recipe.
Next I’ll be trying the egg nog recipe for Xmas 🤶

  98. This recipe is truly wonderful! The cake was soft and tender on the inside and using Nutella as a topping was really the icing on the cake. Literally. What really pleased me was that this was my first try and it was wonderful – for a first try, anyway.

  99. 5 stars
This is the best chocolate mug cake I have made. I used the exact measurements and chose: KA white whole wheat flour and pure olive oil. I put the chips on top 70 seconds was perfect for my microwave. It came out perfect and not spongy at all. I previously had followed the ratio of ingredients in Ree Drummond’s version. The ingredients are the same but the ratio I much different.

  100. 5 stars
This chocolate mug cake was SOOOO GOOD! I used heavy whipping cream instead of regular milk. It came out super moist. I also doubled the recipe and made it in a soup mug, so my daughter and I could share. I will definitely make this again!

  101. 4 stars
Yummy! It rose so much- more than I expected. I am twelve and I made it for my three siblings. 2 of them loved it, so I say it was a win for the minimal amount of time it took. We didn’t have chocolate chips so I just left them out but it’d be better with them. I did add a fun touch by putting sprinkles on the top. I’d definitely make them again! 🙂

  102. 5 stars
First time I get a mug cake to actually rise. It rose so much! Thanks for the simple + tasty recipe.

  103. 5 stars
It totally satisfied my chocolate cake craving! Moist and not too sweet and perfect serving size… a dollop of vanilla ice cream cooled it down 🙂

  104. 5 stars
This was a fantastic chocolate mug cake and even better was the amount! It was the PERFECT amount to satisfy my craving yet not so large I couldn’t finish it or had left overs. Delicious! Thank you for posting!

  105. 5 stars
First mug cake I have ever tried. It was soooo good. I will be making this when my Grands do a sleep over. Thanks for recipe.

  106. I put in a full tablespoon of chocolate chips that all sank since the batter was so thin. I was so pleasantly surprised when it just made a delicious fudgy layer at the bottom! Will be making this again!

I’ve tried so many mug cakes and none of them have been successful but this one is awesome!! I put it in the microwave for one minute and voila! A good looking chocolate cake with such a good flavour!!! Thnx a lot for this recipe. It’s fabulous!!

This is the best recipe of them all!! Super easy and delicious. My microwave took 85 seconds. I topped the cake with powdered sugar and chocolate chips and dug right in. Thank for this recipe!

Can I use a sugar substitute in your chocolate mug cake the next time I make it and put it in the microwave?

    Dear Taste Better From Scratch;
I just made your chocolate mug cake in my microwave and after checking it with a toothpick it is done and I am waiting until it is cool enough to put a dollop of whipped topping on top of the cake.

The best chocolate mugcake recipe I’ve ever tried! It turned out super soft and moist and not that sweet or bitter like other recipes.

Tips! Know your microwave. I had mine for 60sek cuz I wanted mine a little bit like lava.

      Thank you for this recipe!

  111. We are stuck in a hotel with three kids, this was such a hit and lifted their spirits! We can’t wait to try some different mix-ins. Thank you!

This was amazing, even without chocolate chips since we were out. Whenever I’ve made mug cakes, they’ve always gotten rubbery and dry and overcooked, but this cake was so moist and had such a good crumb I wouldn’t have believed it was made in the microwave (and with no egg!) if if hadn’t been made in a mug. I made a small bowl of vanilla frosting since I didn’t have chocolate chips, and it came out really well. I just put the cake in for a minute and 15 seconds to start, then kept cooking for 15 seconds 1 or 2 more times until it looked like the recipe said- set and barely shiny on top. I’m so happy I found a good recipe, especially without eggs.

    I edited it a bit.

Did 1 tablespoon of sugar. And 2 of stevia.
I did half the oil (olive) and added a table spoon of chocolate peanut butter.

I edited it because I didn’t have chocolate chips and I have to watch my sugar. But it was amazing. I have a 750 watt microwave and mine cooked for 2 minutes.

  114. This was the first time I’ve tried a mug cake and it was delicious, I cut the sugar in half and it was perfect!

  115. I used Mayo instead of oil. A heaping spoon, and baking soda instead of baking power. It was really really good. Oh and a ton of whipped cream. Really really good

The mug cake turned out fine. It tasted more like chocolate bread than it did cake. I added chocolate syrup on top to make it sweeter and I like it a lot better with it! 🙂

  117. My first mug cake and it was delicious!!! Made for my 2 girls too and they lived it!!!

Thank you for an amazing easy recipe!!
Will definitely make this again and again!!!

  118. It’s a KEEPER!!! Solved my chocolate craving! I didn’t have chocolate chips, so I cut up some ROLO candy pieces I had. Perfect!

  119. This easy mug cake was delicious. I liked it a little liquidy and not all the way cooked though. If your like me and you sometimes just like the batter, cook it for only a minute and it like heaven in your mouth!

Oh my, I needed a lockdown treat and this was so scrummy! I only had strong bread flour, swapped olive oil for canola oil and used carob instead of cocoa. But it came out absolutely perfectly, so light! I served it warm with ice cream, just what I needed.

Wow, delicious, just like a chocolate lava cake. Reminds me of the chocolate dessert I had on a cruise. Highly recommend if you need a chocolate fix.

I made mug cakes for my family tonight for dessert! I messed up on one so I had to redo it and I finished making it about 30 seconds after the one in the microwave was done! It was super quick and easy, and I am only in 6th grade! definitely will make these again! I think that I will make a chocolate mug cake with peanut butter for my dad next time!

My first ever mug cake came out as a disaster and the egg kind of gave it a sponge texture and it was a little too solid. Then I tried THIS recipe and goodness, I was in awe. My definite go to from here on out. Thank you for an awesome recipe 👌🏽❤️

Love this recipe!!! I’ve made it many times and have added in many things such has peanut butter, Mint m&m’s, Nutella and evening fluff but I just tried a sprinkle of coconut and OMG it was phenomenal

  126. Has anyone made this as a mix in a batch?
I want to make this to give as gifts. How much mixture do you think I should tell people to put in their mug? Do you think 4 tablespoons of mix would do the trick?

    Thanks.

Followed exact recipe the first time…was pretty good.
Next time added 1 extra tbspn of cocoa powder, and 3 tbspn of oil instead of 1. And it was moist, rich and perfect. Followed the cooking instructions this time too.
