This microwave Chocolate Mug Cake recipe will become your new obsession; it's the easiest and fastest way to make dessert for one or two, and you wont believe how delicious it is! This mug cake recipe is made with chocolate chips and no eggs.

My late-night sweet tooth is a real thing and it has led to the creation of some of my favorite dessert recipes, like S'mores Bars, Blintzes, and Monster Cookies. But nothing beats a chocolate cake in a mug or cup in just one minute, in the microwave!

An easy chocolate mug cake in a white mug with chocolate chips sprinkled on top.

I tried my first mug cake recipe a few years ago and it was a disaster.  A few days later I tried another recipe.  Again, a disaster.  Most recipes were dry and tasteless, and contained eggs.

Inspired by my favorite chocolate cake recipe, I set out to develop a rich chocolate mug cake without eggs (you don't need a whole egg, for only one serving of cake), that wasn't dry or spongy and that satisfied my chocolate cake craving.  I'm so excited to share the best chocolate mug cake recipe with you!

Ingredients Needed:

All of the ingredients needed to make the best chocolate mug cake recipe on a baking sheet: flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, salt, milk, canola oil, vanilla, and chocolate chips.

How to make a Chocolate Mug Cake:

Combine Dry Ingredients: Pour flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt in your mug.

All of the dry ingredients needed for a quick chocolate mug cake in a white mug.

Add Wet Ingredients: Pour in milk, canola oil, and vanilla extract. Stir until smooth.

The batter for chocolate mug cake being stirred with a whisk, and that whisk being lifted from the white mug.

Stir in Chocolate Chips.

A white mug filled with the batter for a chocolate mug cake, ready to microwave.

Microwave: Cook in the microwave then let this easy chocolate mug cake rest for one minute before diving in!

Additional Add-In Ideas:

For a Healthier Mug Cake:

  • Sugar: Cut the amount in half, or substitute an artificial sugar sweetener or honey.
  • Oil: Replace with applesauce, or coconut oil.
  • Flour: Use white whole wheat flour.

Can I make it dairy free?

To make dairy-free chocolate mug cake, substitute almond milk or soy milk, use non-dairy butter or coconut oil, and dairy free chocolate chips.

Ingredients

Instructions

  • Spray the bottom of a microwave-safe mug or coffee cup  lightly with cooking spray.
Add flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt and stir together.
  • Add milk, canola oil, and vanilla extract and stir until smooth, being sure to scrape the bottom of the mug. Stir in chocolate chips or sprinkle them on top.
  • Cook in microwave for 70-90 seconds (see note) until cake is just set, but still barely shiny on top. (see notes below). Allow to rest in microwave for 1 minute before consuming.

Notes

*Because all microwaves are different, it's difficult to give a precise cook time.  Start with 70 seconds, wait 1 minute while it cools, then look to see if it is set. Add an additional 15-25 seconds if needed. Allow it to rest in the microwave for 1 minute. The trick with mug cakes is to stop cooking the cake earlier than you think, because you want it to be soft on the inside, and the cake will also continue to cook as it cools.
Add-In Ideas:
Healthier Mug Cake:
  • Sugar: Cut the amount in half, or substitute an artificial sugar sweetener or honey.
  • Oil: Replace with applesauce, or coconut oil.
  • Flour: Use white whole wheat flour.
Dairy-free: For a dairy-free chocolate mug cake, substitute almond or soy milk, use dairy-free butter or coconut oil, and dairy free chocolate chips.

Guys you NEED to try this. It is so good, I have tried mug cakes recipes and they always come out gummy and not what you would imagine but this is it. It has the right texture, amazing flavour, the chocolate chips add a little extra something and all in all I loved it. DEFINETLY RECOMMED.

dudes I don’t normally leave reviews BUT. this is the only mug cake recipe I’ve found that actually has the texture and taste of cake. I sifted all my dry ingredients, so keep that in mind.

This mug cake is light, fluffy and the perfect amount of chocolate! I absolutely love that it’s eggless because today (2-13-23) eggs are expensive and baking is only happening for special occasions which doesn’t help this mama’s sweet tooth…until now! AND it’s perfect size to share and husband approved!!! Thank you Lauren for sharing this fabulous recipe!

Delicious and easy! This is a keeper. I made it with some of the suggested options – subbed maple syrup & applesauce for the sugar & oil, used mint chips, and added coconut. I needed a little over 100 seconds to get it just right (perhaps a bit longer because of extra liquid from the maple syrup substitution??)

I sent this recipe to my daughters who are attending college since I knew they would have a mug and these basic ingredients on-hand. I decided to test the recipe out for them, and it was outstanding–the texture and taste were great–just like what I’d expect when I eat chocolate cake.

I was craving something chocolate but not too sweet. I halved the sugar and used the coconut oil instead. I also had some Valentine’s M&M’s I threw in. This mug cake came out so fluffy yet thick. I am very pleased. Thank you.

I recently discovered mug cakes but they’re so overpriced so I was so happy to see this recipe on fb! It was super easy and I added a spoon of Nutella on top as icing
