An easy recipe substitute for one envelope of Dry Onion Soup Mix, using simple ingredients from your pantry!

A small mason jar filled with dry spices to make Homemade Dry Onion Soup Mix

Don’t you hate it when you find a recipe you want to try, but you’re missing one of the ingredients? Who wants to run to the store for just one ingredient? So frustrating!

The great news is, that many times the item can be made from scratch! It tastes better that way, and usually you’d be surprised how easy it is! Like my homemade substitute for canned “cream of anything” soup. It’s made up of the most simple ingredients — milk, cornstarch, butter, seasonings — and tastes soo much better than the canned stuffed.

Homemade egg noodles is another great example! Just 4 easy ingredients — milk, flour, eggs and salt — and the end result is delicious.

I honestly don’t have a problem with packaged onion soup mix. I’ve used it several times in my slow cooker pot roast, when I’m in a hurry. But I love that I can whip together this homemade onion soup mix recipe whenever I need it.

The cast of charecters are simple, and hopefully ones you already have in your spice rack:

Dry onion flakes, beef bullion granules or paste, onion powder, parsley, celery seed, paprika, black pepper.

A white plate with spoonfuls of the various spices needed to make homemade dry onion soup mix.

Just mix everything together and you’re ready to go! Use in any recipe that calls for one package/envelope of dry onion soup mix, or use it to make a delicious dip for chips or veggies. Just mix with one pint of sour cream.

    1. Like Lauren said to another similar question, just add Better Than Bouillon just before cooking. I love Better Than Bouillon!

This was awesome in a pinch and now I think I will make it instead of buying the packets! So simple, easy, and inexpensive with the spices I already have on hand. Thank you!!

  2. My husband is trying to really watch his sodium, so I was thinking this would be a better alternative. Saying that, are you certain that the sodium count on this is correct? I know that the beef granules would contribute a fair amount, but this is HIGH. ??

    1. The nutritional information is calculated automatically using a plugin and there is definitely room for error depending on the specific brand of products you use.

  3. I am thinking of making this but I use the beef paste, can you still mix it in with the dry ingredients and store it? not sure how that works or if I should leave it out and add it when I am going to use it in the recipe

  4. Could chicken bullion be used instead of beef? I’m looking for a dry onion soup mix that can be used in a chicken and rice dish for someone who is allergic to red meat.

This was so easy & much needed for an oat burger recipe calling for onion dry soup mix. We live 40 minutes from a store & I don’t like the ingredients in a typical store mix. I used Bill’s Best Beaf Seasoning (gluten-free, vegan, non-gmo, no msg) for the beef bouillon as we’re vegan. The mixture is simmering now & smells so good! Thank you for helping out when needed. Glad I found your site.

Made this to add to roast vegetables after using pkg’d soup mix last week. This was so much better!
1/2 cup olive oil and this recipe mixed over 2 ribs celery cut into 1 inch pieces: 1 – 2 lbs fingerling potatoes, halved: Small bag baby carrots peeled: large red onion divided into 8ths: Place on baking sheet and into preheated 425f deg oven for 45 minutes. Great and less salty!

This recipe is awesome, and it looks delicious — I can’t wait to try it. But I have one quick question: what can I use as a substitute for beef bullion cubes or paste? I have a genetic sensitivity to MSG, which is a key savory ingredient in pretty much every commercial brand available in the U.S.

Thanks again for giving me hope that I can finally enjoy onion dip and homemade roast beef without the agony of hypernatremia!

    1. Hi Nick, my best suggestion is, depending on the recipe you’re using this for, to leave it out of this seasoning and make real beef broth to add when you put the recipe together. I can’t think of any powdered or other substitute that would add the flavor you’re looking for except for something really made with beef.

    2. I use Minor’s low salt beef base; it contains no MSG and uses corn starch. You can get it on Amazon.

    3. Another idea is to leave out the beef bullion and use Nom Nom Paleo’s umami powder which you can either make using the recipe on her website, or I think it’s sold commercial at some Whole Foods. It wouldn’ be a 1:1 substitution but I think a half a teaspoon plus the other ingredients would go a long way toward a delicious beef stew or pot roast without MSG or gluten. Any paleo recipe would naturally be gluten free, with no MSG and usually completely dairy free (other than grass-fed butter or ghee, but this is not in the umami powder.)

How much, by measure, do you use of this recipe to equal 1 envelope of Lipton Onion Soup Mix, please?

I read labels more than I ever thought I would now that there are gluten free and lactose intolerant family members. So many things have wheat or milk products in them that don’t need to imho. I’ve used this recipe many times, and it’s a great substitute for the pre-packaged mix. Thank you!

I love how easy this easy and I think it is even more flavorful that the store bought packages. I agree with the comment above, this will be great to keep on hand. Thanks!

I can’t tell you how thrilled I am to find this. I used to use the boxed mixes all the time in my cooking. Then we learned our daughter has Celiac Disease and most of the rest of us are gluten intolerant. We now eat gluten free. All the boxed mixes contain wheat. Thank you for this!! I have one question. Is there any reason why I can’t make a bunch of this and keep it in my pantry with my other spices? Again, thanks!

    1. So happy you found me–hope you and your family love this recipe! You can definitely make a big batch and store it, covered, in a dry place.
