Could chicken bullion be used instead of beef? I’m looking for a dry onion soup mix that can be used in a chicken and rice dish for someone who is allergic to red meat.

This was so easy & much needed for an oat burger recipe calling for onion dry soup mix. We live 40 minutes from a store & I don’t like the ingredients in a typical store mix. I used Bill’s Best Beaf Seasoning (gluten-free, vegan, non-gmo, no msg) for the beef bouillon as we’re vegan. The mixture is simmering now & smells so good! Thank you for helping out when needed. Glad I found your site.

Made this to add to roast vegetables after using pkg’d soup mix last week. This was so much better!
1/2 cup olive oil and this recipe mixed over 2 ribs celery cut into 1 inch pieces: 1 – 2 lbs fingerling potatoes, halved: Small bag baby carrots peeled: large red onion divided into 8ths: Place on baking sheet and into preheated 425f deg oven for 45 minutes. Great and less salty!

This recipe is awesome, and it looks delicious — I can’t wait to try it. But I have one quick question: what can I use as a substitute for beef bullion cubes or paste? I have a genetic sensitivity to MSG, which is a key savory ingredient in pretty much every commercial brand available in the U.S.

Thanks again for giving me hope that I can finally enjoy onion dip and homemade roast beef without the agony of hypernatremia!

How much beef broth if trying to keep to the “one packet of dry” quantity?

Thank for asking that, I was wondering that too! Only because I never use granules of any flavor!

I use Minor’s low salt beef base; it contains no MSG and uses corn starch. You can get it on Amazon.

Another idea is to leave out the beef bullion and use Nom Nom Paleo’s umami powder which you can either make using the recipe on her website, or I think it’s sold commercial at some Whole Foods. It wouldn’ be a 1:1 substitution but I think a half a teaspoon plus the other ingredients would go a long way toward a delicious beef stew or pot roast without MSG or gluten. Any paleo recipe would naturally be gluten free, with no MSG and usually completely dairy free (other than grass-fed butter or ghee, but this is not in the umami powder.)

How much, by measure, do you use of this recipe to equal 1 envelope of Lipton Onion Soup Mix, please?

I read labels more than I ever thought I would now that there are gluten free and lactose intolerant family members. So many things have wheat or milk products in them that don’t need to imho. I’ve used this recipe many times, and it’s a great substitute for the pre-packaged mix. Thank you!

I love how easy this easy and I think it is even more flavorful that the store bought packages. I agree with the comment above, this will be great to keep on hand. Thanks!

I can’t tell you how thrilled I am to find this. I used to use the boxed mixes all the time in my cooking. Then we learned our daughter has Celiac Disease and most of the rest of us are gluten intolerant. We now eat gluten free. All the boxed mixes contain wheat. Thank you for this!! I have one question. Is there any reason why I can’t make a bunch of this and keep it in my pantry with my other spices? Again, thanks!
