Here's what you'll need to make vanilla mug cake:
- all-purpose flour: cake flour also works.
- white sugar
- baking powder
- dash salt
- butter
- milk: any kind will work.
- vanilla
- sprinkles
Vanilla Mug Cake in 3 Easy Steps:
- Add the dry ingredients to a microwave safe mug; flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
- Stir in the wet ingredients: milk, melted butter, and vanilla. Add sprinkles, if desired.
- Microwave for 70-90 seconds.

For healthier mug cake, make these swaps:
- Milk: substitute skim milk
- Sugar: Cut the amount in half, or substitute an artificial sugar sweetener or honey. You could also leave out the sprinkles.
- Butter: replace with applesauce, or coconut oil
- Flour: use white whole wheat flour

Additional add-in ideas:
- Small scoop of Nutella
- chocolate chips (or other flavored chips)
- Small scoop of peanut butter
- Coconut
- Nuts
- Cinnamon
Can you make mug cakes dairy free?
You bet! For dairy free mug cake, substitute almond or soy milk and use dairy-free butter or coconut oil.

Definitely the best mug cake recipe I’ve ever tried!!!
Best mug cake I’ve ever tried. Other recipes always turned out with a rubbery texture. This one is amazing, delicious & hit the spot. I accidentally added too much vanilla & was still crave-worthy. Will make again. Thank you for sharing your fabulous recioe.
MMMMMMMMM…….😋
This recipie was a huge suscess!! So easy!! So moist!! Would totally recommend!
I so appreciate your Vanilla Mug Cake recipe! My hubby and I are now addicted so I must make it every night. Thank you for making it easy to enjoy a nightly dessert without much effort.
OMG!!!! This is the best mug cake ever!!!! All the other mug cake recipes i have made have been really tough and were gross, this mug cake however was delish and had a nice texture. When I made this i used less sugar but I used brown sugar and I also added in some cinnamon and it was soo yum. Thanks so much!!!!!!
It was absolutely delicious loved it! However I did make one for me and my brother and got a bit of a stomach ache!
I tried a few different vanilla mug cake recipes and this was by far the BEST one! I’m a new fan of this site b/c of this alone.
I loved this, to make it even better though try adding half a tsp of cinnamon, a quarter tsp of pumpkin pie spice, and 2 tsp of maple syrup
really good, but needs more milk. maybe like 1/3 of a cup, because it was really flour-e and once i added milk it was better👍🏼
This was delicious! I used French vanilla coffee creamer in place of milk because I was out, and I put a dab of ice cream on top. Satisfied my sweet tooth!
So I got a cute mug as a present the other day and thought, “This mug would be great for mug cakes.” Yours is the recipe that came up and I’m so glad I tried it! It’s also very versatile since it’s vanilla. I swapped the vanilla extract for pandan extract and used coconut milk and it was a delightful flavor explosion. I will absolutely make this again with ube extract and other types of flavors! I love that I don’t need an egg for this!
Tasted very buttery, and didn’t look how I thought it would look, other than that it tastes not bad
It was the best vanilla mug cake I’ve tried and I’ve tried a lot! I liked it because it wasn’t super sweet like so many mug cakes are. Instead of the sprinkles I used a few semisweet chocolate chips sprinkled on top. Cooked it for 70 min and it was perfect. Definitely will make it again.
Hello Lauren, I made this cake and it was pretty tasty. I defrosted some mix berries and added a little sugar and it was awesome and filling! Thanks from the US Virgin Islands for this recipe.
Amazing Rich vanilla cake definitely trying more of their recipes it makes for a perfect midnight snack delicious
This was very good. I think I may have over-cooked it slightly at 70 seconds but it was still quite tasty. I added a handful of semi-sweet chocolate chips instead of sprinkles, as I don’t have them, and subbed half of the vanilla with butterscotch, because we both love butterscotch… Next time I’ll do just 60 seconds, but this recipe is the lightest, fluffiest mug cake I’ve had so far. Will make again, for sure.
This was sooo good! I replaced the butter with veggie oil, which turned out even more fluffy than it was when I made it with butter! Would highly recommend for a midnight snack.
I followed your recipe as a base bjt altered it slightly by using a 1:1 ratio gluten free flour blend and adding a crushed oreo as a mix in. The recipe was very easy to make and it only took me a few moments. I only needed 70 seconds on my microwave, it came out perfect. Thanks so much for the recipe, I have already bookmarked it to use again in the future!
