Here's what you'll need to make vanilla mug cake:
- all-purpose flour: cake flour also works.
- white sugar
- baking powder
- dash salt
- butter
- milk: any kind will work.
- vanilla
- sprinkles
Vanilla Mug Cake in 3 Easy Steps:
- Add the dry ingredients to a microwave safe mug; flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
- Stir in the wet ingredients: milk, melted butter, and vanilla. Add sprinkles, if desired.
- Microwave for 70-90 seconds.

For healthier mug cake, make these swaps:
- Milk: substitute skim milk
- Sugar: Cut the amount in half, or substitute an artificial sugar sweetener or honey. You could also leave out the sprinkles.
- Butter: replace with applesauce, or coconut oil
- Flour: use white whole wheat flour

Additional add-in ideas:
- Small scoop of Nutella
- chocolate chips (or other flavored chips)
- Small scoop of peanut butter
- Coconut
- Nuts
- Cinnamon
Can you make mug cakes dairy free?
You bet! For dairy free mug cake, substitute almond or soy milk and use dairy-free butter or coconut oil.

When I made this i used less sugar but I used brown sugar and I also added in some cinnamon and it was soo yum. Thanks so much!!!!!!
It was absolutely delicious loved it! However I did make one for me and my brother and got a bit of a stomach ache!
I tried a few different vanilla mug cake recipes and this was by far the BEST one! I’m a new fan of this site b/c of this alone.
I loved this, to make it even better though try adding half a tsp of cinnamon, a quarter tsp of pumpkin pie spice, and 2 tsp of maple syrup
Hi… just tried the vanilla mug cake n savoured it as our after meal desert have to say besides being super easy it was super delicious too …. I just added half a tablespoon of sugar over the two and a little more baking powder n a slight extra tipping of vanilla n some tiny bits of glazed cherries 🍒…. will post a picture next time …
For my husband’s late-night cake craving, this was the absolutely perfect recipe! The ingredients were few, and easily available. We substituted Splenda for sugar, but everything else was as the recipe requested (except for sprinkles). It turned out great!
I’ve made this 2x this week ❤️
This is the greatest mug cake I have had in my whole entire life.
It’s the best. I LOVE it 🥰
I hate this mug cake it turned out like dough and it was discussing. And it doesn’t taste that good !!
It is disgusting not discussing
I think you made it wrong
Sooo good. Don’t post mean stuff BTW
You probably made it wrong. i mean after all, you don’t even know how to spell disgusting, so how would you know how to make a mug cake?
When I looked at this i was like, “OOOOOOOOOOOO!” That was one of the best burns of all time!
This is 🔥🔥🔥.. so so good
Best mugcake EVER!
Thanks for sharing!
This is my go-to mug cake recipe. My 3 year old loves it and it’s a quick fun project for a toddler to help with 🙂 we have subbed sprinkles with chocolate chips and once tried it with brown sugar when we ran out of white sugar & it’s delicious every time. My kids are allergic to egg so it can be tough finding recipes for sweets- this one fits the bill perfectly because it’s fast, easy, egg free and a good sharing size 🙂
i have a question can i substtute the sprinkles for chocolate chips
Yes, of course. Enjoy!
definitely. i did.
I absolutely love this mug cake. It has the perfect texture! I added extra vanilla as I don’t have the real stuff, and added extra sprinkles (you measure sprinkles with your heart, not your measuring spoons). I topped it with Nutella, and it’s absolutely lovely. I think I’d like it with a bit extra sugar if I didn’t have the extra sweetness on top, but I’ve got more of a sweet tooth than most.
