Here's what you'll need to make vanilla mug cake:
- all-purpose flour: cake flour also works.
- white sugar
- baking powder
- dash salt
- butter
- milk: any kind will work.
- vanilla
- sprinkles
Vanilla Mug Cake in 3 Easy Steps:
- Add the dry ingredients to a microwave safe mug; flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
- Stir in the wet ingredients: milk, melted butter, and vanilla. Add sprinkles, if desired.
- Microwave for 70-90 seconds.

For healthier mug cake, make these swaps:
- Milk: substitute skim milk
- Sugar: Cut the amount in half, or substitute an artificial sugar sweetener or honey. You could also leave out the sprinkles.
- Butter: replace with applesauce, or coconut oil
- Flour: use white whole wheat flour

Additional add-in ideas:
- Small scoop of Nutella
- chocolate chips (or other flavored chips)
- Small scoop of peanut butter
- Coconut
- Nuts
- Cinnamon
Can you make mug cakes dairy free?
You bet! For dairy free mug cake, substitute almond or soy milk and use dairy-free butter or coconut oil.

I LOVE IT SO MUCHHHH whoever made this I love you
Definitely the best mug cake recipe I’ve ever tried!!!
Best mug cake I’ve ever tried. Other recipes always turned out with a rubbery texture. This one is amazing, delicious & hit the spot. I accidentally added too much vanilla & was still crave-worthy. Will make again. Thank you for sharing your fabulous recioe.
MMMMMMMMM…….😋
This recipie was a huge suscess!! So easy!! So moist!! Would totally recommend!
I so appreciate your Vanilla Mug Cake recipe! My hubby and I are now addicted so I must make it every night. Thank you for making it easy to enjoy a nightly dessert without much effort.
OMG!!!! This is the best mug cake ever!!!! All the other mug cake recipes i have made have been really tough and were gross, this mug cake however was delish and had a nice texture. When I made this i used less sugar but I used brown sugar and I also added in some cinnamon and it was soo yum. Thanks so much!!!!!!
It was absolutely delicious loved it! However I did make one for me and my brother and got a bit of a stomach ache!
I tried a few different vanilla mug cake recipes and this was by far the BEST one! I’m a new fan of this site b/c of this alone.
I loved this, to make it even better though try adding half a tsp of cinnamon, a quarter tsp of pumpkin pie spice, and 2 tsp of maple syrup
This was so good! The crumb was so nice! I added a little sour cream to the batter and it came out like a pound cake. Next time I’ll experiment with adding an egg yolk to make it taste even more like pound cake.
Amazing! Most delicious mug cake I’ve ever made, and I’ve tried many recipes. I love how easy & quick it is!
So easy and so good! Happily munching away on delicious, warm cake.🙂
Definitely the best mug cake I’ve had. Every other one I’ve tried comes out dense and rubbery, but not this one! The only difference really is that this one doesn’t have egg, and I think that’s the key. Keeping this recipe for all my cake cravings!
I really enjoyed this! I didn’t add sprinkles because I am not a fan of them, I used plant milk and non-dairy butter, added a touch of cinnamon along with the vanilla, it is a sweet recipe so if that’s not something you’re looking for i’d suggest less sugar and then you can always sugar to taste afterwards with maybe some powdered sugar.
Just made this last night, actually made 2 servings in a bowl. Wasn’t terrible. Maybe I just needed to let it cool first. Didn’t necessarily give me that true feeling of eating a piece of cake, but, it’ll do when I need something sweet.
I thought this cake was great..I love white cake and it’s actually a very hard thing to find…I used cake flour and really whisked the dry ingredients together well..then used real butter and half and half instead of milk because I didn’t have any…whisked it really good, microwaved for 70 seconds..in the meantime made a little homemade buttercream and drizzled it over the cake. Omg..really light, fluffy, and fabulous..gave my little pup a little bite as well and he gives 10 stars. Thank you for this recipe…now I’m in trouble..I’m gonna be making this probably more than I need to.
It wasn’t really good like i thought it would be. I put the exact measurements for all the ingredients (except for the flour) and used the same ingridients listed. The cake batter was actually really good it tasted exactly like cake batter but when it was done cooking, it tasted horrible and not like a cake AT ALL. I did add more flour to it at one point because it was super liquidy so maybe that’s where it went wrong. Im pretty disappointed.
really good!! I put nutella inside the cake and it was amazing!! Would definitley eat again!
Honestly tasted like pure sugar, would not eat again.
the BEST mug cake I ever made. Super soft! I added vanilla sugar instead of extract and it still turned out great. I’ll add less white sugar next time but w o w
