This microwave Chocolate Mug Cake recipe will become your new obsession; it’s the easiest and fastest way to make dessert for one or two, and you wont believe how delicious it is! This mug cake recipe is made with chocolate chips and no eggs.

My late-night sweet tooth is a real thing and it has led to the creation of some of my favorite dessert recipes, like S’mores Bars, Blintzes, and Monster Cookies. But nothing beats a chocolate cake in a mug or cup in just one minute, in the microwave!

I tried my first mug cake recipe a few years ago and it was a disaster.  A few days later I tried another recipe.  Again, a disaster.  Most recipes were dry and tasteless, and contained eggs.

Inspired by my favorite chocolate cake recipe, I set out to develop a rich chocolate mug cake without eggs (you don’t need a whole egg, for only one serving of cake), that wasn’t dry or spongy and that satisfied my chocolate cake craving.  I’m so excited to share the best chocolate mug cake recipe with you!

  • Oil: Replace with applesauce, or coconut oil.

Can I make it dairy free?

To make dairy-free chocolate mug cake, substitute almond milk or soy milk, use non-dairy butter or coconut oil, and dairy free chocolate chips.

Instructions

  • Spray the bottom of a microwave-safe mug or coffee cup  lightly with cooking spray.
Add flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt and stir together.
  • Add milk, canola oil, and vanilla extract and stir until smooth, being sure to scrape the bottom of the mug. Stir in chocolate chips or sprinkle them on top.
  • Cook in microwave for 70-90 seconds (see note) until cake is just set, but still barely shiny on top. (see notes below). Allow to rest in microwave for 1 minute before consuming.

Notes

*Because all microwaves are different, it’s difficult to give a precise cook time.  Start with 70 seconds, wait 1 minute while it cools, then look to see if it is set. Add an additional 15-25 seconds if needed. Allow it to rest in the microwave for 1 minute. The trick with mug cakes is to stop cooking the cake earlier than you think, because you want it to be soft on the inside, and the cake will also continue to cook as it cools.

I had all the ingredients and I used the melted butter instead of oil. Had dark chocolate chips. Super easy and it was good! It took care of my craving. For me, 75 sec is all I needed. Thanks!

I’m not sure if maybe I did something wrong but came out almost flavorless I felt like it was missing something.

I’ve tried your recipe and it works perfectly without the egg. I also didn’t add cocoa powder since we didn’t have one. Thanks for this!

  4. This is the best chocolate mug cake ever! Came out nice and fudgy, not too sweet! Thanks for creating such a great recipe!

Easy, quick, delicious! I didn’t have chocolate chips so I plunked a leftover milk chocolate Valentine’s Day heart on top which worked pretty well, and followed the “suggested add-ins” with a wee bit of peanut butter. Really satisfied the cake craving I was having.

YES! This was perfect. I’ve tried other recipes and they were just too dense for my liking. I used melted butter, and pushed a couple of squares of dark choc into the centre once I’d put in my muffin tray – I baked it as I don’t use a microwave. 180 celsius for 20 mins. Add some cream…oh my, it hit the spot.
    Thank you!
